UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KATIE A. LUTZ, or cLINToN, MIssoURI.
DRESS-MAKERS SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,099, dated January 15, 1889.
Application filed April 26, 1888. Serial No. 271,977. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, KATIE A. LUTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Clinton, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-lllakers Squares; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of t'he drawings is a representation of my invention and is a front view thereof. Fig. 2 is a reverse view of the same. Fig. shows the square folded, and Fig. i is a detail showing the miter-hinge.
rIhe invention relates to improvements in dress-makers or tailors squares; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
rlhe object of the invention is to provide a sectional square, of wood or other light material, that may be folded to bring its several sections in a parallel and compact form; and a further object being to provide a initerhinge the flaps of which extend upon and strengthen the ends of the inner sections. The several hinges, being' secured by screws to the surface of the rule-sections, are easilyreinoved, so that a new section may beput in in place of one that may be accidentally broken.
Referring to the drawings, A A designate the two inner sections, and B B the outer sections hinged to the outer or square ends of the sections A. The sections are provided on each side with similar graduation s, C, in inches and fractional parts thereof. The inner ends of the sections A are beveled to forni a square miter, and the miter-hin ge D is secured to the surface of the sections by screws. The hinge D is square in outline, and has its edges in line with the edges of the sections, so that the strain is distributed over a large surface, giving strength to thesqnare at a point most liable to fracture.
E E represent strap hinges securing the respective sections A B together. The hinges E ai'e placed on the sections on the side opposite to the side upon which .the hinge D is secured, so that the sections fold in a reverse manner, bringing-'the part-s closely together.
Having described my invention, what I claiin is- A gradn ated folding square consisting of the sections A B, the sections A, niitered at one end, the miter-hinge secured to the surface of the sections having its edges in line with the edges of the sections, and the strap-hinges securing the sections A B together and placed on the sides opposite the miter-hinge, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. p
