MARTIN B. WALLACE, OF HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT lN PILLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,929, dated July 9, 1878; application filed June 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN B. WALLACE, of Huntsville, in the county of Madison and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Pillows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan View, part sectional, of my pillow case and frame 5 and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the sprin My invention relates to pillows; and it consists in providing a pillow with one or more openings or recesses, a spiral wire or other spring for keeping said recesses open, a ventilating-tube passing from the outside into each recess, and a pillow-case provided with one or more openings to correspond with the said recesses, all as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents a pillow of any desired size, stuffed with feathers, hair, or other suitable material. In this pillow are formed three recesses, B, more or less, which open from the top of the pillow, and maypass entirely through the pillow, or be closed at the under side by the covering of which the pillow is made.
The openings or open recesses B are of such width that the car of the person using the same will rest over the same, relieving the painful feeling often experienced when theear is buried down in a pillow, and at the same time keeping the ear and head cool and comfortable, especially in warm weather. Each air-chamber B is provided with a small spiral wire or other spring, 0, which runs across the same to keep the chamber open, and prevent its closing by the pressure of the head on the pillow. I also provide each recess B with a tube, D, leading from the outside of the pillow into the recesses for supplying the same with air. These tubes may be made of rubber, or any other material that is suitable for the purpose.
F represents the pillow'case, which is made with openings at I, to correspond with the recesses B in the pillow, so as to leave said recesses entirely open at the top.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pillow provided with one or more recesses upon one side, and having a pillow-case with openings corresponding with said recesses, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN BAUM \VALLACIC.
