UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOEQ JAMES MILWAIN, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAP-ROBES AND FOOT-POCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,920, dated March 21, 1876; application filed January 10, 1876. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MILWAIN, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a Combined Lap-Robe and Foot-Pocket, ofwhich the following is a full and exact description.
The object of my invention is to secure greater protection against the cold for the feet of persons during their vehicularriding than is to be derived from the use of lap-robes made in the ordinary manner; and in order to effect this purpose I combine with the laprobe a pocket, forming a part thereof, for receiving the feet, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents the under side'of a lap-robe containing my improvement, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
As shown in the drawing, A is the lap-robe, which may be made of any suitable material, but preferablyI make them of the furs commonly used for this purpose. They may also be made of any size, form, or style most desirable. Near its lower edge, and extending either partially or entirely across its width, a This pocket may bemade of the rough refuse pieces of fur, that are of but little value for other purposes, the hair side being placed uppermost for the purpose of affording to the feed a soft and easy cushion,- and to secure the greatest degree of warmth attainable therefrom.
By referenceto Fig. 2 of the drawing, the
.the pocket B falls flat upon the bottom of the vehicle, leaving the mouth of the pocket suf-- fieientl y open for the free introduction of the feet, which naturally enter therein. When in the pocket, the weight and pressure of the feet aid greatly in keeping the robe in its proper place.
By combining the foot-pocket with the laprobe in the manner herein described, a great saving of material is effected, as, by utilizing for covering the lap and limbs, that part of the robe that is commonly folded under for the protection of the feet, (which often equals onethird of the entire length of the robe,) a'm uch smaller robe may be used, and a greater degreeot' protection derived therefrom, as the closed ends of the pocket excludes the cold air from coming into contact with the feet from that direction, thereby remedying one of the greatest defects in the use of the lap-robe as commonly made.
I claim as my invention- The combination of the lap-robe A, with the foot-pocket B, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
