IMPROVEMENT IN SEATS AND CUSHIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,257', dated March 31, 1874; application filed January 9, 1874 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAMILTON E. SMITH, of West Fitchburg, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Seat and Cushion 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a vertical central sectie of my cushion. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan or f top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts..
The invention consists in a perforated frame or seat, in connection with a Ventilating-cushion composed of sections or columns, and with a perforated envelope inclosing said cushion, in such a manner that a circulation of air is established throughout the seat, whereby the same is rendered cool and convenient for sittin-g.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a frame or seat, perforated, as at a, and B is my cushion, which is tted and placed thereon in any convenient manner. Said cushion B is constructed of a series ofsections or columns, C, each of which is composed of a separate envelope, lled with hair or other suitable material. These sections form the body of my cushion, and are sewed or otherwise connected to each other so as to retain a vertical position. The sections O form also springs, imparting a certain stiffness to my cushion, while they are sufciently elastic to form a comfortable seat. If desired, a metallic coiled spring maybe arranged in each of the sections or columns G, iu order to add to their elasticity and strength. The letter I) designates an envelope or jacket of leather, canvas, or other material, which is made to inclose the sections C, composing the body of my cushion, said envelope being perforated, as at b, so that when placed on the perforated seat, as represented in the drawing, the air will circulate through the perforations in said seat, and through those in the envelope, so as to produce a continuous ventilation throughout the cushion. The envelope or j acket D is fitted loosely on the body of the cushion, and is made to inclose the same only on its top and sides, so that it can be readily removed for the purpose of cleaning the cushion, and for the purpose of reversing the position thereof on the seat. If desired, however, the envelope can be made to inclose the cushion on all of its sides.
Among the other advantages of my invention may be mentioned that of cheapness and durability; and, furthermore, by the continuous ventilation, a more healthful seat is obtained.
I am aware that a mattress or pillow covered with an air-tight material, perforated to permit air being' drawn or forced through the Saule for warming or Ventilating, is not new; and, further, that a feather-bed composed of a number of chambers filled with feathers, and the walling of the bed being provided with openings, closed by valves, for Ventilating purposes, is not new 5 and such, of itself, I disclaim.
That I claim as new, and desire to recare by Letters Patent, is The combination of the perforated frame A, the vertical columns (l, cach composed of a separate envelope lled with hair to form the cushion, and the perforated enveloping jacket or covering D, all being constructed and arranged substantially as described, for the object speciiied.
HAMILTON E. SMITH.
