Description
r H. GORWIN. Truss.
No. 197,104. Patented Nov. 13, I877 INVENTOR W %/lmzss I a ATTGRNEYS PETERS. PHOTO-UTNOGRAFHER; WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. GORWIN, OF NEWTBURG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,104, dated November 13, 187 pp n filed October 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. OORWIN, of Newburg, in the county of Orange andState of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Trusses; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan view of my truss. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the pad, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the same. 1
The nature of my invention consists in a hinged pad provided with a recessed plate and a spring; also, in the combination and arrangement of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A A represent two elliptic springs, which are covered with leather and padded, so as to be worn easily, and to prevent contact with the body. These springs are connected at the back of the wearer by a strap and buckle, B, and at their front ends each spring is provided with a plate or brass casting, O. D D represent the pads, which may be made of wood alone, or of wood covered with other material, or of any material suitable for the purpose. These pads are connected to the plates 0 by means of hinges a a, arranged in such a manner that the pads will open inward and upward; or, in other words, they are hinged to the upper edges of the plates, as shown.
Each plate 0 is cast with a hollow boss, 11, projecting on the front, and having exterior screw-threads to receive a nut or screw-cap,
d. In this cap, through the boss b, is placed one end of a spiral spring, h, the other end of which is placed in a socket formed in the under side of the pad D. The pad is thus adjusted to proper position by the hinge a and spring h. v
The two plates or castings O O are connected by a strap and buckle, G, whereby the position of the pads may be adjusted to suit the rupture.
The operation of this truss is such as to be adjustable at all required points, as to distance of ruptures from each other, if more than one, as to size of person, and as to pressure of the pads upon the ruptures.
The strap B, connecting the ends of the springs A A, besides being adjustable to suit the size of the person, is designed to take the place of pads or other appliances usually adopted in the construction of trusses, thus enabling the person wearing it to do so with comfort at all times.
The upward direction given to the pad by the action of the spiral spring places the pad in contact with the rupture at the proper position. The amount of pressure of the pad upon the rupture is easily adjusted by altering the length of the spiral spring, or by inserting one or more washers in the cap 11.
The strap G, connecting the plates O 0, adjusts the position of the pad to suit the rupture.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a truss-pad, of the plate 0, with boss 12, the hinged pad D, spring h, and cap d, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the elliptic springs A A, plates 0 0, provided with bosses b b and caps d d, hinged pads D D, springs h h, and straps B G, all arranged substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HOWELL CORWIN.
Witnesses:
