Description

PATENTED JULY 21, 1908.
J. A. ANDERSON.
TRUSS.
APPLICATION FILED I'EB.14. 190s.
Q/Vifn cones UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN A. ANDERSON, OF COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA.
TRUSS and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification, referones being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
My invention relates to improvements in trusses, and consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a truss of improved construction which may be easily adjusted and held in position without the use of a spring and without discomfort to the wearer.
The above and other objects of the invention are attained in its preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved truss; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional View taken on the plane indicated by the line 22 in Fig. 1 and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail horizontal sectional views taken on the planes indicated by the lines 33 and 4--4 in Fig.
In the drawings 1 denotes a supporting plate or member which carries an adj ustably mounted truss pad 2 and is adapted to be held in position upon the body of the wearer by a body strap 3 and a thigh or leg strap 4.
The support 1 is preferably made of a piece of heavy leather or other material having very little flexibility; and it has a reduced lower portion 5 separated from its upper por tion 6 by one or more grooves or scores 7 so that the two parts 5, 6 may bend with respect to each other when the wearer stoops over. The body strap 3 has an adjusting buckle 8 at one end and said end is suitably secured upon the outer face of'the upper part 6 of the support adjacent to the top of the latter. The thigh stra 4 is also provided with an adjusting buck e 9 and is similarly secured upon the lower part 5 of the support 1. If desired, the inner face of the support 1 may be covered with lining 10 of flannel or other soft fabric which is cemented or otherwise suitably secured.
The truss pad 2 consists of a core or button 11 having a convex outer face and a recessed Specification of Letters Patent.

' inner face. The outer face of the core 11 is edges of which coverings 12, 13 are secured in the recess in the inner face of the core by a removable clamping plate 14, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The pad 2 is vertically adj ustable upon the support 1 by forming in the latter a series of apertures 15 to receive a screw 16 having its head 17 secured against rotation in the core 11 beneath the plate 14 and its screw threaded end 18 engaged by a milled nut 19. By making the support 1 comparatively long and of flexibly or hingedly connected lower and upper non-flexible portions or sections 5, 6 and by providing the body strap upon the upper section 6 and the thigh strap upon the lower section 5, it will be seen that the device will be effectively held in position upon the wearer without the use of a spring or s rings, and that there will be little or no liabi ity of the device shifting out of its proper position. Thescoring of the leather support 1 allows its two ortions or sections to swing or fold to angu ar positions when the wearer bends or stoops, thus insuring comfort to the wearer. The two attaching straps enable the device to be easily applied, adjusted, and removed, and the adjustment of the pad permits the latter to be held at the proper place upon the body. It will be understood that the trusses may be constructed for use upon either side of the body, and that they may also be made double.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A truss comprising a substantially rigid supporting plate scored or grooved to divide it into upper and lower portions adapted to bend upon each other, a pad upon the upper portion, and an attaching strap upon each of said portions.
2. A truss comprising a support, attaching straps thereon, a pad having a core the core, a clamping plate secured u on the recessed face of the core for clamping the edges of its covering in the recess, and means for attaching the pad to said support.
3. A truss comprising a support, attaching straps thereon, a pad having a core formed with a recessed face, a covering upon the core, a clamping plate secured upon the recessed face of the core for clamping the edges of its covering in the recess, a screw covered with leather 12 and flannel 13, the.
formed with a recessed face, a covering upon having its head secured against rotation in the core beneath said clamping plate, the threaded end of the screw being adapted to be passed through one of a plurality of apertures formed in the support, and a nut upon the threaded end of the screw.
4. A truss comprising a substantially rigid supporting member scored or grooved to divide it into upper and lower portions adapted to bend upon each other, a pad upon one portion and an attaching means upon each of said portions.
5. A truss comprising a support formed with a series of openings, a pad having a screw stud projecting from it and adapted to be passed through one of the openings in the support to adjustably position it thereon, a nut upon the projecting threaded end of the screw stud, an adjustable body strap secured to the upper portion of said support and an adjustable leg or thigh strap secured to the lower portion of said support.
6. A truss comprising a supporting plate or member having flexibly united upper and lower portions, the upper portion being formed with a series of apertures, a pad having a screw stud projecting through one of said apertures, a nut upon the projecting threaded end of said stud, an adjustable body strap attached to the upper portion of said plate or member and a leg or thigh strap attached to the lower portion of said plate or member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. ANDERSON.
