all wltont it may concern: Be it known that I, J AHES K. STOCKTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to trusses, and more particularly to trusses of that type which are supported on the waist and legs of the wearer; and among the objects of the invention is the provision of such a truss which is supported in such a manner as to exert an easy yet lirm pressure on the ruptured part without irritating the same and without exerting an undue pressure on the groin.

The invention also aims to provide a truss which may be readily applied to and removed from the body and which is extremely efficient and durable in use; and with these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in a truss embodying the novel features and combinations of parts which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanyingv drawings, illustrative of one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved truss; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2 2, Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, a designates the waistband of my improved truss, which is preferably made of soft flannel-like material, but of suilicient strength to possess the required degree ofdurability. To the front ends of the waistband are attached elastic straps b, the strap 6 being capable of adjustment by means of a buckled, which is attached to a doubled-up elastic strap (1, connected to one side of the yielding pad 0. The buckle (Z may be of any approved construction, so as to permit the easy adjustment of the elastic strap 7) and permit thereby the accurate adjustment of the pad to the ruptured part. The opposite side of the yielding pad 6 is connected to the lower end of the elastic strap 5. The elastic strap 41 is further connected by a transverse strap f with a buckle f on the waistband adjacent the point of attachment of the strap 6, so as to secure thereby the tight closure of the waistband around the waist.

The yielding pad 6 is made tapering at its lower end and connected with two leg-straps g, which pass below the crotch and around the legs, said straps being made, like the waistband a and yielding pad 0, of soft material, which is suitably reinforced. so as to provide the required degree of durability. The ends of the leg-straps are each provided with an elastic end portion or extension-strap r/, one of which is connected to a buckle (Z attached to the pad 0, and the other to a buckle at the end of a doubled-up elastic strap 7 the other end of which is attached to the elastic pad 0. To that end of the leg-strap g which is nearest to the rupture is attached a stiffened pad it, which serves to take up the strain on the leg-strap and prevent the friction of the same with the adjacent portion of the leg and groin, so that an easy and comfortable ii t of the trusspad is obtained in connection with the adjustable connecting-strap As the truss-pad is suspended from the waistband and held in position on the ruptured part by the leg-straps, it is not liable to change its position, and serves thereby to hold the rupture back and prevent it from protruding and exerts a firm yet gentle pressure on the same, so as to permit the gradual healing of the rupture.

The entire truss is made of soft material that clings comfortably to the body, (to the exclusion of leather, metal springs, or hard pads, which exert an irritating and uncomfortable action on the body,) whereby a very easy and comfortable wearing of the truss and a beneficial action on the rupture is obtained.

In the drawings, a truss for right-hand ruptures is shown, in which the yielding pad is held somewhat toward the right-hand side when at the bottom. \Vhen a left-hand truss is desired, the position of the pad has to be shifted toward the left-hand side. In this case the yielding pad is attached to the opposite leg-strap. The strap and buckle connecting the front ends of the waistband are also reversed that is to say, extend from right to left instead of from left to right, as shown in the drawings. Likewise the connection of the stiffened pad with the waistband is made at the opposite side of the pad.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A truss comprising a waistband, a yielding pad, elastic straps connecting the front ends of the waistband with the upper part of the yielding pad, leg-straps attached to the lower end of the yielding pad and provided with elastic end portions, fastening devices for attaching the elastic end portions of the leg-straps to the middle portion of the yielding pad, and a pad attached to one of said legstraps.

2. A truss comprising a waistband, elastic means for connecting the front ends of the waistband, a yielding pad, elastic straps conmeeting the front ends of the waistband with said yielding pad, leg-straps connected with the lower end of the pad and provided with elastic end portions, means for adjustably attaching said elastic end portions to said pad, and a reinforced holding-pad carried by one of said leg-straps.

3. A truss comprising a Waistband, a yielding pad, means connecting said band and pad, leg-straps attached at one end to the lower portion of said pad and provided at their opposite ends with elastic portions, a buckle and an elastic strap attached to the upper portion of said pad, one leg-strap being attached at its elastic end'to said buckle and the other leg-strap to said elastic strap, and a pad carried by one of said leg-straps.

4. A truss comprising a waistband, a pad, a strap attached to one end'of said waistband, a doubled strap connecting said first strap with said pad, means connecting the opposite end of said waistband with said pad, a strap conmeeting said doubled strap with said waistband at a point adjacent the last-named end thereof, and supporting means carried by said pad.
