IILLIAM THOMAS AARON, OF CALLANDS, VIRGINIA.
BACK-BRACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,206, dated May 12, 1891. Application iiled February 24, 1891. Serial No. 382,550. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM THOMAS AARON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Callands, in the county of Pitt- Sylvania and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braces or Back-Supporters, of which the following isa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certainnew and useful improvements in braces or back-supporters, having for its object to support and strengthen the back of a person engaged in work requiring him to occupy a stooping position, whereby the weakening of and strain on theback vof the wearer is entirely obvi-V ated.
The invention comprises shoulder-straps, an elastic back-strap or section designed to bear against the small of the back, and two leg-straps designed to engage the heel portion of a wearers foot, said straps being adjustable and the leg-straps being permitted to move or rock conformable with the movement of the leg.
The invention also comprises the detail construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows my invention in rear elevation. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of a slightly-modified form of connection between the leg and back straps.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the back piece or strap, which is preferably made of elastic gore or other suitable material of sufficient 'strength to hold or brace the back of the wearer when in a stooping position. To the upper end of this back piece or strap A are adjustably secured by buckles a the lower ends of shoulder-straps d', the other ends of which are bentback and secured to the strap proper, so as to form loops a2 for the arms 'of the wearer.
B is a breast-strap, composed of two parts and having its outer ends attached to the front portions of shoulder-straps a', their inner ends being united by a buckle b. B is a similar back-strap parallel with the strap B, and the'outer ends of its sections are looped Alower end of back piece or strap A, so as to be free to rock when the leg-straps are moved. To the lower end of these leg-straps O are adjustably secured the upper ends of supplemental straps or slings D D, which consist each of a two-part strap having its ends adj ustably secured by a buckle (Z2, said straps of the sling being designed to pass vertically down the opposite sides of a wearers leg. To this supplemental strap or sling near its upper end is secured a band or strap E, having its ends united by a buckle e. This strap E is designed to be attached to the wearers leg justbelow the knee-joint. Aband or strap F is fastened at one end' to one of the parts of each of the straps or slings D near the lower portion of such sling, and its other looped end f encompasses the other part of such strap or sling. This strap f is designed to be passed across the instep of the wearers foot.
While the straps comprising my invention, with the exception of the back-strap A, are preferably made of leather, any other suitable material may be employed. The essential requirement is that the back piece or strap A should be of sufficient elasticity to support and strengthen the wearer when he is in a stooping position.
My invention is especially designed to be worn by tobacco-planters; but it is obvious that it is of equal advantage to all engaged in work that requires the constant stooping over or bending of the body.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a slightly-modiied form of connection between the leg-strap C and the back piece or strap A, said connection in this instance consisting of abuckle O, to which loops g g, secured to the upper ends of the leg-straps, are designed to be secured.
I claim as my invention* 1. The herein-described improved brace or back-supporter, comprising the elastic back piece or strap, shoulder-straps, the leg-straps loosely secured at their upper ends to saidback piece or strap, and the supplemental straps or ICO leg-straps attached to said looped ends, the sul'iplenlental straps or slings ad J ustably se- 15 cured to the lower ends of said leg-straps, and the knee and instep straps attached no said supplemental straps or slings, substantlally as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix n'iy signature 1n zo presence of two Witnesses.
VILLIAM THOMAS AARON.
