SUSPENDERS. 4 No. 366.475. Patented July 12, 1887 WITNESSES: INVENTOR fiamwwk 4M zzemm ATTORNEY PETERS, Phowikhngnphar. WashinQtnm'DJ L UNITED STATES 'ATENT FFICEQ CHARLES C. GILMORE, OF SVVANTON, VERMONT.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,475, dated July 12, 1887.
7 Application filed March 21,1887. Serial No. 231,656. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. GILMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Braces or Suspenders and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide braces or suspenders which will perform their office with certainty and effectiveness without undue pressure upon the shoulders and with a ready yielding of the several parts of the device to the movements of the wearer, and which may also be readily adjusted to the re quirements of the girth of the wearer, as oocasion may demand.
My invention comprises certain novel combinations of parts whereby the objects aforesaid are effectually secured.
A A are the back-straps of the braces or suspenders, made of non-elastic webbing or other suitable non-elastic material, and provided at their lower ends with button-holes or button-hole devices a in the usual or any suitable manner.
B B are the upper or shoulder straps, made of elastic webbing or other suitable elastic material, and attached at their lower or rearmost ends, I) b, in any suitable manner to the upper ends of the back-straps A. At their forward or opposite ends they may be provided with the usual fold, c, and adj usting-buckles (Z, and with the usual or any suitable button-hole loops, e.
G is a horizontal strap, made of elastic webbing or other suitable elastic material, and having its ends attached at or near the junctions of the non-elastic back-straps A with the elastic or shoulder straps B. This elastic strap may be made of two pieces, in order that its available length may be increased or di minished by a suitable buckle; or it may be made of a single piece of such length that it may be folded upon itself, with the fold drawn through the buckle to increase or diminish the available length of the said horizontal strap, In the term buckle I include any of the devices usually known by said term, or metallieclasps or clamps which serve the same ora cognate purpose. The buckle f, represented in the drawing as applied to the horizontal strap 0, is of substantially the same construction as the buckles 1, shown as employed at the lower ends of the back-straps A, and which, being now well known in the trade, need no specific description here. By the horizontal strap 0 being of elastic material and of variable available length, it maybe readily so adjusted with reference to the girth of the wearer, and to ease of motion on the part of the wearer, as to relieve the person from undue pressure even under conditions of activity or exercise- As the button-hole devices a a, as well as the button-hole loops 6 e, are placed in the loops formed by folding the ends of the suspender upon themselves and by providing the same with the adjusting-buckles g d, the total available length of the suspender may be readily adjusted to the requirements of the wearer, and inasmuch as the back-straps A are non elastic, while the other or shoulder straps B are elastic, it follows that the action of the shoulders in movement, or in work or exercise, being directed upon the said elastic straps B B, the latter yield immediately to the strain upon them without materially disturbing the non-elastic straps A A, or that portion of the garment dependent therefrom.
Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. In braces or suspenders, the combination of non-elastic back-straps A, elastic shoulder straps B B, and elastic horizontal strap 0, having its ends attached at or near thejunction of the elastic shoulder-straps with the non-elastic back-straps, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The combination, in braces or suspenders, of non-elastic back-straps A, provided with adjusting-buckles g and button-hole devices a, elastic shoulder-straps B, provided with adj listing-buckles d, and button-hole loops 6, all substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
CHARLES C, GILMORE.
