mea re.
ToaZZ whom) it may" concern i r Be it known that I, JAMES R. DAIL, citiz'enof the United States, residing at Goldsboro, in'the county of lVayneand State of 5 North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trusses and it has as its primary aim to provide a surgical ap- 1 pliance of this class which will be entirely comfortable to the-wearer and willproperly support a rupture or other abdominal disorder, and be not liable to slip or'yield so as to cause discomfort. I Another aim of the, invention is to provide a truss of such construction that it'will' not exert undue pressure against the wearers back and will have no metal parts liable to come into contact with the body. j
2 Theinvention has as a-further object the provision of a simple adjusting means for the crotch straps which means will not be liable to become disarranged by the wearers clothing. v
In the accompanying drawing'srFigurel is a perspective view of the truss applied;-
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section and partly in plan, parts also being broken away, illustrating the waist encircling portion and the so pads of the truss; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view illustrating the adjusting means for the crotch straps; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the hooks {for holding the crotch straps at adjustment.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
the waist band of the truss which may be of any suitable material and which is designed to encircle the waist of the wearer at the front and above the hips but which is open at the back. Connected to one end of the waist belt 1 is a strap 2 and a similar strap 3 is connected to the other end of the belt. These straps are, in applying the truss, crossed upon the wearers back at a point {slightly above the waist line and then pass lby means of a hook 4 and openings 5 respec-.
tively upon and in the straps 3 and 2, or by In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates.

any ordinary buckle orv otherffastening device which will hold thestraps connected at adjustment.
The pa ds-of'the trussware indicatedin general by the reference numeral 6' and the pads are preferably stuffed and may be of I leather, cloth or any othersuitable material and each pad has a rear' portion 7 and a for-" ward portion .8 which are connected" by seams 9 at the sides.
The forward portion of'the waist belt constitutes a portion of the front-8 of each pad at the upperend thereof as. clearly shown in Fig. 3 and as indicated at 10,
although desired the said front portion may extend the entirei'height of each pad and the waist belt may be attached to the pads inany suitable manner.
In order that the pads may fit the body'in sucha manner as to fit the bubic bone a line of stitching indicatedat 11 isfrun trans versely across each pad ata point 'ap-proXi-- mately 1 between the upper and lower ends thereof so that each pad is contracted between its side ends/ The-pads "may be stuffed with cotton or any suitable material 12 and theyare preferably located one at each side of the middle ofthe waist belt 1. It is 'also preferable that the pads be of greater thickness than'width at their upper portion and that they taper slightly in the direction of "their lower ends, and attached to each pad at its lower end is the forward end of a crotch strap 13. {The crotch straps 13, in applying the truss, are passed about the thighs and the rear ends of the straps are then adjustably connected with the waist belt,
so as to form a hook the bill of which is inf dicated at 16. The portions of. the wire at the other side of the bend 15 constitute the shank of the hook and this shank is held between the waist belt 1 and the pocket straps 17 which are stitched to said waist belt. The wire at the upper end of the shank of each hook is bent laterally in opposite directions as indicated at 18 and these portions are also housed between the waist belt 1 and the pocket strap 17, stitches 19 being run through the said belt and strap beneath the portions 18 hereby to provide for a firm support for the hooks. Attached to the crotch straps 13 are relatively short straps 20 which may be of any suitable material, although preferably of leather and these straps 20 are provided each with a number of openings 21 designed to receive the bill of the respective hook.
From the foregoing description of the invention it will be seen that the truss may be readily and quickly applied and adjusted and that the straps 2 and 3 are adapted to support the rear side of the belt 1 and not for the entire belt, at the desired point upon the body of the wearer, the crotch straps being adjustable to more or less firmly bind the secured at one extremity to each of said pads and having its opposite extremity free, an adjustable connection between the free extremity of each of said straps and the ad- G'opies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the jacent extremity of the belt, said straps being connected with the belt adjacent the ends thereof, and adjustably connected coacting straps secured to the ends of the belt and disposed to cross each other upon the back of the wearer.
2. In a truss, a waist-belt having its rear ends spaced apart, spaced depending pads carried at the front of the belt and secured thereto upon each side of a point midway between the ends of the belt, a crotch strap secured at one extremity to each of said pads and having its opposite extremity free, an
adjustable connection between the free extremity of each of said straps and the adjacent extremity of the belt, said straps being connected with the belt adjacent the ends thereof, and adjustable coacting straps secured to the ends of the belt and disposed to cross each other upon the back of the wearer, one of said last mentioned straps being relatively longer than the other to extend partially around the trunk, beneath one arm, over the adjacent shoulder and in the rear of the neck to engage the other strap in the front of the opposite shoulder.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
