SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,820, dated May 21, 1901.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that we, BERTNIE M. WILHITE and FRANK A. HOYT, citizens of the United States, and residents of Gordon, in the county of Sheridan and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Trunk-Handle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a handle for trunks which when grasped by a person will not tend to crowd the persons hand against the side of the trunk, but will, on the contrary, spring outward, so as to enable the person handling the trunk to conveniently lift and carry the same. This end we attain by providing a handle with a spring therein, which runs longitudinally throughout its length and which is provided at its ends with curved loops, which fit loosely in housings attached to the trunk and which receive pins carried in the housings, on which pins the loops are freely movable, so that when strain is put on the strap its middle portion is forced to move outward from the trunk.

This specification is the specific disclosure of various forms of our invention, while the claim defines the actual scope thereof.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a front view of the invention with a part thereof broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same with apart shown in elevation, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the strap or handle drawn outward as in operation.

The handle proper is formed of a metallic which is fastened to the spring a and over which the cover I) is passed and the other of which forms the loop proper. This latter part is curved, as shown in Fig. 2. The loops 0 project into housings f, secured to the side of the trunk, and the loops receive pins e, which are fastened transversely in the housings, the pins permitting the loops 0 a limited move ment in the housings. By curving the loops 0, as explained above, the handle is caused to spring outward from the body of the trunk when pressure is applied to the handle. Therefore when the person grasps the handle the spring a, coacting with the curved loops 0, throws the handle outward, and the hand of the person handlingthe trunk is not pinched or otherwise injured.

If desired, the handle may be constructed without the leather or other covering 19, as shown in Fig. 3. This figure also accurately shows the manner in which the spring a. and loops 0 are joined.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a tru nk, of open housings secured thereto, transversely-disposed pins fastened rigidly in the housings, a spring trunk-strap the ends of which are located respectively adjacent to the housings, a loop for each end of the strap, the loops comprising end portions fastened to the ends of the strap, and curved main portions which respectively inclose the pins of the housings, for the purpose specified.
