Description

H. WINTER.
HEAD SECTION.
(No Model.)
N0. 319.537. Patented June 9, 1885 a? I v llVVE/VTO/Z 'Lforney I N PETERS, Phntn-Liihngnpllur. Wlihlnziom D C- UNITED- STATES FATENT OFFICE;
HERMANN WINTER, OF HELENA, MONTANA TERRITORY.
HEAD-SECTION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,537, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed January 24, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN WINTER, of Helena, in the county of Lewisand Clarke and Territory of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head- Sections; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in head-sections, the object of the same being to provide a separable head-rest for beds, cots, or other similar devices, and to provide a head-section which can be conveniently elevated and lowered.
A further object is to provide means whereby the pillowed sections can be adjusted relatively to the head-section. A further object is to provide means of the above character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use 5 and with these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of one of the pillows, showing the springs attached to the ends thereof.
A represents the main supporting-frame of the section, the side bars of which are provided with the ratchets B, which may be formed integral with the side bars, or formed separate and secured thereto. The head-rest O is pivoted to the forward end, D, of the frame A, and is provided near its center on each side with the pawls or teeth E, the free ends of which are cut away, forming the shoulders F, by means of which the teeth are enabled to secure a double rest or hold upon the ratchets B, as the forward end of the teeth will fit in the grooves formed between the ratchets, and the shoulders will impinge against the upper edge of the ratchets. The pawls are connected together by means of the connecting-rod F, which is secured to the ends thereof, thus insuring a uniformity of action.
The side frames of the head-rest are pro- (No model.)
spring is to bear against the upper faces of the grooves, it will be seen that the pillows will occupy a rigid position at any point in the grooves, and yet the same can be moved with a slight degree of pressure.
It willbe seen from the description that when it is desired to lower the head-rest the pawls are moved toward the rear end of the frame, and for the purpose of elevating the head-rest the pawls are moved forward and secured in the ratchets.
When the head-rest is not in use, the same can be made to occupy a small space by en tirely freeing the pawls and permitting the head-section to rest flat within the frame.
My invention is simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use, and can be made at a small initial cost.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with asupporting-frame and an adjustable head-rest frame secured to said supporting frame and provided with grooves, of pillow-frames, the opposite ends of which rest and slide within said grooves, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination,withasupporting-frame provided with ratchets, of a head-rest pivotally secured thereto, the said head-rest having two or more grooves on the inner faces thereof and pillows adj ustably secured therein, and means for securing the head-rest in elevated and lowered adjustment.
3. The combination, with a supportingframe provided with ratchets, of a head-rest pivotally secured thereto, the said head-rest having two or more grooves on the inner faces thereof, and pillow-frames having springs on the ends thereof adapted to fit in said grooves, and In testimony whereof I have signed this 10 pawls secured to said headrest for adj ustably specification in the presence of two subscribsupporting the same, substantially as set forth. ing witnesses.
4. The combination,with a supporting-frame 5 provided with ratchets, of a head-rest secured HERMANN WINTER.
thereto, said head-rest having two or more grooves in its inner faces, and pillow-frames l Witnesses: having semi-elliptical springs secured thereto, LUOIEN W. BLIss, substantially as set forth. .WALTER E. FREDERICK.
