TYPE-WRITERS CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 647,178, dated. April 10, 1900. Application filed Jnne26,1899. Serial No. 721,819. (No model.)
To all whom it rmty concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN CHICHESTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writers Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the construction of what are commercially known as typewriters chairs, and in which is incorporated a tilting back-rest, one illustration of this class of chairs being shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me January 5, 1897, No. 574,602.
The essential features of my present invention are hereinafter fully set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure I represents a vertical central section of a chair embodying the invention.v Fig. II represents a horizontal section thereof, taken in a plane immediately below the seat and looking in an upward direction.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts.
The letter A indicates a base; B, a seat; 0, a back or back-rest, and D an arm constituting a support for the back on the seat.
The chair-base A is provided with a socket A to receive and engage with a screw-spindle 0, depending from the chair-seat, or a spider O thereon for permitting vertical adjustment of the seat in a well-known manner but it may be here remarked thatrny invention is adapted also to a chair in which the seat is a rigid part.
The back-supporting arm D is hinged to the chair-seat B by means of a joint e at that portion of the seat which in practice isin the rear of the chair, and the joint used for this purpose is so arranged in relation to the parts united thereby as to permit of an oscillating motion of the supporting-arm on the joint pivot.
The arm D projects downward below the chair-seat B, and to the lower end thereof is connected one end of a rod F, the other end of which is connected to a hand lever G, which has its fulcrum in a pivot-screw G on the chair-seat and is provided with a spur G whereby it is adapted to engage with either of a series of holes in a perforated strap J, which is secured to the seat in proper relation to the hand-lever and its spur.
The oiiice of the lever Gris to adjust the back-supporting arm D and with it the back 0 on the pivot of the joint e, and thereby vary the angle of inclination of the back, and it will be apparentthat by means of the spur G of the lever coacting with the perforated strap J this adjustment may be effected in a simple and expeditious manner. In order to facilitate the adjustment of the hand-lever G, it is connected to a spiral spring S, at one end of this spring, in such a manner as to cause the spring to act on the lever with a tendency to draw it in a direction rearward to the chair.
In order to accommodate the hand-lever G to a chair with a spider 0 it is curved at points near its opposite ends, and to facilitate the engagement of the spur G with the holes of the perforated strap J the lever is preferably made of spring metal and arranged to bear against the strap with a tendency to force the spur into either of its holes.
In the example shown in the drawings the back 0 is adjustable independently of the sup porting-arm D and provided with a spring O between it and the arm.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A chair in which are combined the following instrumentalities: the chair base, the seat, the back, the back supporting arm hinged to the seat, the hand-lever with a locking-spur, the perforated strap adapted to engage with the spur, the rod connecting the back-supporting arm to the hand-lever and the spiral spring connected to the hand-lever, all substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
