, Letters Patent No. 104,398, dated June 21, 1870.
IMPROVED FOLDING- DENTAL CHAIR.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known thatI, CHARLES M. ADAMS,- of Canton, in the county of Madison and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and improved Portable Dental- Chair and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing and to thelletters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a dental chair, s'o arranged and constructed as will enable a traveling dentist to carry it with him from place to place without inconvenience, and at little expense.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a side view of my chair,'and
Figure 2, a back view of same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the drawing. I
A represents an ordinary folding or portable chair, so constructed as to be readily folded together in a close and compact manner.
Attached to this chair, in the manner hereinafter described, is the sliding bar a.
This bar is secured to the chair by the guides b I), through which it passes, and by means of 1 which it'is confined to the chair, the guides bb being, firmly fixed to the braces c c of. the chair A.
The upper end of the sliding bar a is provided with a padded head-rest, d, so aflixed to said bar by the hinged pivot c as will enable said rest to'be more or less inclined at pleasure, and when so moved'it is held firmly in position by the brace f, one end of which is pivoted to the head-rest d, and the other. end passes through the projection 9, ,where it is confined to the desired position by the set-screw h, or, iusteadof said set-screw, said brace may be serrated on its lower edge, and thus act as a ratchet. 1
When it becomes necessary'to elevate 'or lower the head-rest d, it is easily done by simply sliding the bar a up or down through the guides b b, and then fixing said bar in position by the set-screw It.
In order to make the chair as comfortable/as possible to the occupant, I form twcslots, 'l l, in the sides of the uprights forming the back, and provide said' slots with notchesor ratchets, so. that, when the back is inclined backward or forward, as convenience may require, the rod m. wil fit into said ratchets and re tain the back in the desired position.
In addition to the head rest and its several parts, I also aflix to said folding or portable chair a foot-rest, B, which is composed of two parallel side pieces or braces, n n, provided at one end with the foot-rest 11, and the other end extending to and under the'brace or round 7' of the'chair A, and pivoted to said chair by the pins s s, or in any other desirable way.
1 do not wish to limit myself to any particularmanner of constructing either head-rest or foot-rest; nor do I claim either of said rests as my'invention; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure .by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of a folding or portable chair with an adjustable back, with a head-rest and foot-rest, substantially as herein described and set forth.
CHARLES M. ADAMS.
