T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PETER C. FENNELLY, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Camp-Chairs, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art.to which, it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to camp chairs, beach chairs and like devices, and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class with an improved canopy which is composed of separate longitudinally adj ustable parts whereby the length of the canopy forwardly and backwardly may be ad just-ed as desired, said canopy being also detachably and foldably connected with the chair so as to facilitate the folding and packing thereof; a further object being to provide a canopy of theclass specified having means whereby the front end portion thereof-may be vertically usted or moved into different positions; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms apart, in which the separate parts ofmy improvement are designated by suitable referencecharacters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side view of acamp or beach chair provided with my improvement, part of the construction being broken away; Fig. 2 a sectional plan view-of the device as shown in Fig. 1; Fig.3a partial section on the line 33 of Fig; 1'; Fig. 4: a partial section on the line l 4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 a partial section on the line G6 of Fig. 2. and said chair is provided with a canvas seat 6 which is secured to the parts 0 ate. and to the topsof the back side portions 6 at e in the usual manner, and all these parts are of the usual construction and form no part of my invention. The back side portions 5 of the chair are also provided with the usual pivotedbracesf which are connected attheir lower ends by across rod f which operates in connection with notches or recesses c in the legs 0, and connected with the parts 6 above the connection of the braces f as shown at'b are other braces .g which serve to support the canopy h and which are connected therewith at g by means of keepers g? slidably mounted on the canopy frame.

' The canopy consists of a central or oblong rectangular frame member h and a front rectangular frame member 2', and a rear rectangular frame member 7', and the front and'rear rectangular frame members of the canopy are longitudinally adjustable within the central frame member J2? and the braces g, or the sleeves 9 thereof are longitudinally movable on the side bars of the central canopy frame member if.

The central canopy frame member 72 comprises parallel side bars h connected by transverse strips 71 which are secured to said side bars by screws or other devices as shown at 72 in Fig. 4E. The front canopy frame member 2' is composed of side bars '5 a transverse front end portion 2' and a transverse rear end portion i and the rear end part of the front canopy frame member 2' is provided with projecting guide devices 7? which move in correspondinglongitudinal grooves 71, inthe inner sides of the sidebars 71, of the central canopy frame member.

The rear end Canopyframe member j consists of a. yokes haped metallic frame y' and the ends ofthe sidebars thereof are provided on their innersides with reinforcing blocks j g-and said blocks are provided with projecting devices j* which move in longitudinal grooves fill the inner'sides of the side bars 12, ofthe central canopy frame member.

The front end canopy frame member 2' is also provided at its opposite sides and at the inner end thereof with countersunk springs, 2' which bear on the side barsh of the central canopy framemember and the rear end canopy frame member is provided with corresponding countersunk springs j which bear on the inner sides of the side bars 72, of the central canopy frame member, and by means of these springs the front canopy frame member '11 and the rear canopy frame member 7' may be adjusted longitudinally in the central canopy frame member to any desired extent and the total length of the canopy frame may thus be regulated.

The opposite sides of the rear end canopy frame member 7' are provided with bayonet slots j and the upwardly directed extensions 6 of the front leg 5 are provided at their ends with pins which are movable in said slots, or are adapted to enter said slots, and by means of this construction the rear end of the canopy is detachably connected at the upper ends of the side extensions 71 of the front legs I).

I also provide means whereby the'front canopy frame member 71 may be dropped downwardly at an inclination as shown in Fig. 1, and this means consists of bayonet slots m formed in connection with the slots or grooves 706 in the front end portions of the side bars 72, of the central canopy frame member and secured to the bottom of said end portions of said side bars are depending keepers m and the front projectingdevices i which are secured to the sides of the canopy frame member i are adapted to drop into said keepers, as shown in Fig. 1, while the rear projecting devices '5 remain in the slots or grooves 72 The braces g are detachably connected at b with the upwardly directed extensions 6 of the front legs Z2, this connection being shown in detail in Fig. 3 and being made by means of a bolt n provided at one end with a head if and at the opposite end with a thumb nut WP, and by means of this construction the canopy k may be detached from the ch air member whenever necessary, or desirable, and said canopy may be connected with any chair of the class specified.

The central frame member 7% is provided with a covering 0 composed of any suitable fabric and which is preferably provided with side aprons 0 as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and said covering is secured to the side bars 71. of the central canopy frame by tacks or other devices 0 except where it is necessary for the sliding sleeves g to operate on the side bars, and the front canopy frame member 2' is provided with a fabric covering 72, while the rear canopy frame member 9 is provided with a similar fabric covering 2 The coverings 0, p and p of the canopy, or the separate parts thereof, are not shown in Fig. 1 but are shown in Figs. 2, 4, 5 and 6.

lVith my improvement, the entire front end portion of the canopy may be raised or lowered within certain limits by means of the braces g and the front canopy frame member 2' may be additionally lowered, as shown in Fig. 1, whenever necessary and the position of the canopy and the front end portion thereof may thus be adjusted to suit the occupant of the chair.

lVhile I have shown and described the preferred form and construction of my im proved canopy for chairs of the class specified, my invention is not limited to the exact details thereof, as herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A canopy comprising a central oblong frame member, the side members of which are provided in their inner faces and in the front and back portions thereof with slots or recesses, and supplemental front and back end frame members longitudinally movable in said central member and provided in the side members thereof and adj acent to the inner ends thereof with pins which operate in said slots or recesses to permit the longitudinal movement of said supplemental end frame members, and means in the front end portion of the sides of said central frame member for permitting said supplemental front end frame member to be lowered into an inclined position.

2. A canopy comprising a main frame member, and a supplemental frame member secured to said main member for sliding and swinging movement.

3. A canopy comprising a central frame member, a supplemental back member slidingly mounted in said central member, and a front member slidingly and pivotally mounted in said central member.

4-. A canopy comprising a main frame member having side bars provided in their inner faces with longitudinal slots which terminate in curved slots, and a supplemental frame member provided on its side edges with spaced pins which enter said slots, for permitting said supplemental member to slide in said side bars and swing relative to the same when in its extreme forward position.

5. The combination of a seat provided with a back having uprights, of a canopy pivotally connected at its rear end to said uprights and provided at its front end with a sliding and swinging frame, and braces pivotally connected to said uprights and slidingly connected to said canopy.

6. The combination with a seat provided with a back having uprights, of a canopy pivotally connected at its rear end to said uprights and consisting of a central member having side bars provided on their in- 'ner faces with longitudinal slots, the forward portions of the inner faces of the side bars being provided with curved slots which communicate with certain of said longitudinal slots, a rear member having pins which are slidingly mounted in certain of said longitudinal slots, a front member provided on its side edges with spaced pins which are slidingly mounted in the curved slots with which the longitudinal slots communicate, and braces pivotally connected with said uprights and slidingly connected to the side bars of the central member of the canopy.
