SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,727, dated April 5, 189e. Application filed September 30, 1896. Serial No. 607,466. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that we, WINDSOR O. CAMP- BELL and EVA K. CAMPBELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Sulphur Springs, in the county of Benton and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Chairs and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in chairs or stools, and has more particular relation to piano-stools.

The invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.

In the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, Figurel represents a perspective view of our improved pianostool with al1 of the seats extended for use. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section through the stool, as shown in Fig. 1, the adjusting rack and pawl being shown in side elevation. Fig.V 3 represents a perspective view of our stool in its closed position; and Fig. 4 represents a detail perspective view of the main seat, taken from below. Fig. 5 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of one of the adjustable supports for the auxiliary seats.

A in the drawings represents the frame of our improved stool, B the vertically-movable main seat, and C C the auxiliary seats hinged to the same. The frame A is of any ldesirable construction, but is preferably rectangular, and is adapted to accommodate the hollow vertically-movable seat B. The said seat B comprises a seat portion b and vertical side walls bs, the latter adapted to t down over the frame A. The said seat B is adj ustably supported in position by means of a rack-bar b2, with which it is provided. This rack-bar is adapted to slide within a guiding-casing a, mounted upon the interior of frame A by suitable cross-bars and provided with an aperture through which a suitable pawl isadapted to operate. A spring-pawl ot is mounted in the frame A, so as to engage the rack-bar, and has an ornamental operating-head a2.

It will be observed from the foregoing description that the main seat B may be raised or lowered at will to any desired adj usted position by simply grasping the head a2 and releasing the inner end ofthe pawl from the rack b2, then moving the seat up or down,

and again permitting the pawl to pass inward These seats when in their extended positions are supported by pivoted slotted bars c c, attached thereto andv adjustable upon each other longitudinally, so that the seats may be supported in their proper positions, according to the varying heights to which they may be adjusted. The lower ends of thelower slotted bars of each seat are connected by a crosspiece a4, so that they are prevented from moving laterally.

It will be observed from the foregoing description that we provide a stool that can be instantly adjusted as to height and may be used for either one, two, or three persons at will. When the two auxiliary seats are folded over in position, the stool has the appearance of an ordinary single piano-stool.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a suitable supporting-frame, of a vertically adjustable seat mounted on the same, an auxiliary seat hinged to each side of the main seat so as to be'folded thereon or extended at will, and verticallyadjustable supportinglegs pivotally` connected to the outer ends of the auxiliary seats and each comprising two spaced slotted pivoted bars, a yoke, the respective arms of which are slotted, and 4connecting-screws adapted to be passed through the slots of the respective pivoted arms and arms of the yoke, whereby the yoke may be raised or lowered to adjust the height of the support, substantially as described.
