PATENT QEETQE.
NUMAN AXELRAD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 780,771, dated January 24, 1905.
Application filed September 20, 1904. Serial No. 225,180.
To all whom. it 7nct7 concern.-
Be it known that I, N UMAN AXELRAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to chairs; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be used either as an ordinary chair, as a reclining-chair, or as a lounging-chair; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a chair constructed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed. 7
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a chair embodying my invention, the section being taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line 2 20f Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
In the practice of my invention, as shown in the drawings, I provide a chair comprising a seat-frame a. corner-legs 6, and upright and backwardlyinclined side back posts 0, together with a seat member cl and back member e. The front corner-legs b are extended above the seat-frame a, as shown at 6 and the back side posts 0 may also be formed by extending the rear leg members 6, if desired, and the tops of the upwardly-extended parts 6 of the front legs I) and the tops of the rear back side posts 0 are connected by arms f in the form of construction shown.
The seatframe a is provided in the top thereof and in the opposite sides thereof with a rabbet-groove and the seat (Z is mounted on said frame in said grooves and free to slide forwardly and backwardly. The back 6 is hinged to the seat (Z, as shown at h, and inthe form of construction shown both the seat and back consist of suitable frames upholstered, as shown at i.
In one side of the seat-frame, or in both sides, if desired, and near the corresponding front corner-legs is a chamber or recess j, in which is pivoted, as shown atj a transverselyranging lever f beneath which is a spring j, which serves to force the free end of said lever upwardly. The free end of the lever is directly under the corresponding side of the frame of the seat cl, and said end of said lever is provided with a locking-pin k, and said lever is also provided with a plunger which is pivoted thereto centrally thereof and which passes up through an opening in the seatframe and the upper end of which is provided with a knob 6 and the upper end of the opening in the seat-frame through which the plunger Z0 passes is provided with a metal casing k in the form of construction shown, which closes said opening and forms a receptacle for the knob or head if of said plunger.
The inner sides of the back side posts 0 are provided each with a metal plate m, in which.
is formed a longituditudinal slot m and the said side posts are provided with longitudinal grooves or recesses m which correspond with the slot m in the plates m, and the opposite sides of the frame of the back 0 are provided with pins m, which pass through the slots m in the plates m and are free to move therein. The frame of the seat 45 is also provided with a metal plate at, having holes 41?, adapted to receive the locking-pin in of the lever j and the bottom of the chamber or recess f, in which said lever is placed, is closed bya plate 0. As thus constructed it will be obvious that the seat and back may be locked in any position by means of the lever 1 and said lever may be depressed, so as to release the seat by pressing on the knob or head if of the plunger k When the seat is in its rearmost position, the back 0 is held in an upright position, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, and when the seat moves forwardly the back 6 will be lowered, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The operation of raising or lowering the back and of moving the seat forwardly and backwardly may be performed by a person sitting in the chair by simply pressing on the knob or head 74 of the plunger 73 and exerting a forward-and-backward movement or pressure on the seat and back, his feet rest- "ing on the floor, and in this way the position of the seat and the angle of the back may-be regulated as desired.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown but one locking device for holding the seat and back in the desired position; but it will be apparent that this construction may be employed at each side of the chair, if desired, and in this way I provide a chair the seat and back of which may be used in the ordinary position or the seat moved forward and the back downwardly in such a manner that the said back may be held at any desired angle, this operation being performed by the occupant of the chair, and when desired the position of the back and seat may be reversed or the seat moved backwardly and the back raised in the same manner or while the occupant remains in the chair.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A chair provided with a seat-frame, a seat mounted thereon and movable forwardly and backwardly, a back which is hinged directly to said seat and movable therewith, said back being mounted between side posts secured to the seat-frame and provided with pins movable in slots formed in said posts, andalocking device in the seat-frame consisting of a transversely-mounted spring-supported lever provided at one end with a vertically-movable pin adapted to engage the seat-frame and a vertically-movable plunger connected with the other end of said lever and passing up through the side of the seat-frame, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of September, 1904.
