UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE g,
WILLARD FRANK WELLMAN, or BELFAST, MAINE, ASSIGNOR, n'r nnsnn ASSIGNMENTS, 'ro HIMSELF AND FRANK A. HOWARD, or sAnE- rLAon.
ADJUSTABLE HEAD-REST FOR CHAIRS.
S PECIFIGATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,443, dated August 21, 1883.
Application filed January 2, 1883. {No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that IJVILLARD .FRANK XVELL- MAN, of Belfast, in the county of Valdo, in the State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Head- Bests for Chairs; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which' Figure l is a rear elevation; Fig. 2,. an end view; and Fig. 3, a tra-nsversesection of my improved head-rest as applied to the back of a chair, the nature of my. invention being defined in the claim hereinafter presented.
This l1ead-rest is intended for use in barbers, dentists, or various other kinds of chairs.
In the said drawings, A denotes a revoluble'pad or cushion, which is formed some-v the ends, giving the curve lengthwise of the ci shion, as shown. It is arranged within, and ,at the center of its ends it is pivoted to a furcated carrier, B, so as to be capable of revolving freely therein." This carrier has ears (I, a extending down from it, there being arrangedbetween them and pivoted to-thema shaft, 0, provided with two toothed seg ments orsegmental ratchet-s, D D. A bowspring, D, attached to the carrier at its middle, and formed and arranged therewith, as represented, has fixed to it a bar, E, that extends across the toothed arcs of both of the ratchets and into them, and the ends 6 of whichpass into guide-slots a in the cars a.
From the shaft two or any other suitable number of rods, F, project downward, as shown, each of them going through an ear or bracket, G, extended from the back H of the chair, and provided with a clamp-screw, I, to bear against the rod.
When a sitter in a chair provided with the revolublepad or cushion rests his head or the same time the curvature of thepad causes 7 it to snugly lit the curve of the head, so that the latter lies easy without a tendency to roll. By means of the segmental ratchets, and their pawl or cross-bar; and its supporting-spring, and the pivoted carrier, the revoluble pad or cushion can be moved or adjusted back and forth, or nearer to or from the sitter, as occasion may require. To operate this adjusting device it is only necessary to push up the bar E against spring D, which can be done by the occupant of the seat from the front, if desired. The ends 6 of this bar-E resting inthe guide-slots a, keep the bar true, and it is thrown by the spring with certainty down into the proper notches of the ratchets. The whole device'is also adjustable vertically or up and down to bring the pad to a convenient altitude ,for sustaining the head of a person.
I am aware that a revoluble head-rest is not new, and also an adjustable one is not new, and I lay no claim, broadly, thereto.
What I claim is- The revoluble pad or cushion A and its furcated carrier B, provided with the ears 0-, which have guide-slots a, in combination with a supporting-frame provided with ratchets D, spring D, and bar E, attached to spring D, and having its ends 6 in the slots a, all combined and arranged as and for the purpose setforth.
' WILLARD FRANK WELLMAN.
