UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HILLS, OF PLAINVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT I N HEAD-RESTS FOR SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,907, dated January 27, 1874; application filed January 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HILLs, of llainville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Head-Rests for Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in head-rests for chairs, car-seats, and benches; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of devices, which will be more fully described hereafter, whereby a cheap, si1nple, and effective rest for the head can be attached to seats of all kinds, and which can be adjusted to any desired position to suit the convenience of the user.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents a suitable metal standard, having its lower end made forked, so as to straddle over the top of the seat or chair, to which it is secured by means of the thumb-screw c, carrying the pad (I, to prevent injury to the wood or paint. This standard is made hollow, so as to receive the rod or stem e, having the rest g secured to its upper end. This rod can be adjusted up and down, or turned freely around, so as to adjust the rest'to any desired position, and which is fastened in place by means of the set-screw h. The pad is jointed or hinged to the top of the rod, so as to allow it to be adjusted forward or backward, so as to give any desired inclinaton to the users head. Fastened to the front and rear sides of the plate i, secured to the back part of the rest, are the slotted spring-plates 0, which, by means of the screw 1 passing through them and the top of the rod 0, hold the rest inclined forward or,backward,' as may be desired. By means of the vertical adjustment and rotary movement of the rod 0, and the back and forward movement of the rest, it will be readily seen that the rest can be adjusted to any position desired.
Having thus described myinvention,I claim 1. The combination of the standard 6, slotted plates 0, set-screw l, and head-rest g, substantially as set forth.
2. A head-rest composed of the standards a c, set-screws c h l, slotted plates 0, and rest g, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my handthis 2d day of January, 1874.
GEORGE HILLS.
