With the garment or article applied in the manner described, the limbs of the wearer are surrounded and protected adjacent to the feet, and above the feet and upwardly to a certain Zone of the body the wearer is sub` stantially surrounded and encased by and in the article. The purposes of a lap robe are thus accomplished, namely, the conserving of the warmth of the body of a user and pro tection from cold winds, dampness or other effects of the elements. rlhe reasonably free and unhampered use of the lower limbs is permitted, and there are no loose portions left free to become displaced and uncover the user, or obstruct or interfere with the operation of the vehicle. Likewise, Athe nether garment is clos-ely confined and prevented from catching in any working part of the vehicle or its controlling members. The device likewise protects the clothing of the wearer, where it covers the saine, from dirt, grease and other objectionable or harmful substances.
The side edges of the device come approximately into meeting relation behind and beneath the wearer, who, in his position upon the seat, rests his weight upon such edge por tions, which assists in maintaining the article or garment in its proper position of service. The device may be very readily and rapidly applied and secured in place and likewise removed, and may be stowed away in a tool box'or in a door flap or other convenient receptacle. The device may also be worn when repairing or tinkering with the vehicle, as a protection against tearing `or soiling of the clothing, and when so used will have many of the advantages which enter into its normal or customary use. y
It is obvious that many changes and variations may be made in practicing the invention, and in departure from the-specific details and features of construction and formation above set forth, all without departing from the true spirit of the invention.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim and desire 'to secure by LettersPatent: l. A garment including a body portion formed with upper and lateral extremities and lower and lateral extremities, said body portion being shaped to coverthe front and sides of the wearers body and legs, a pair of flaps extending from the upper and lateral rial and shaped to cover the front and sides of the wearers body and legs, said body portion likewise being provided with upper and lateral extremities and lower and lateral extremities, a pair of flaps extending from the upper and lateral extremities` of said body portion, to be extended around the back of the wearer, detachable fastening means for fastening said flaps together in the back of the wearer, a pair of straps extending from the lower and lateral extremities of said body portion, to be extended around the lower portion of 'the wearers legs and upwardly along the sides thereof, and means for detachably securing said straps to said body portions when said straps are so extended. Y
8. A garment including a body portion formed of a single unsevered sheet of mateti t) rial and shaped to cover the front and sides of the wearers body and legs, said body portion likewise being provided with upper and lateral extremities and lower and lateral extremities, a pair of flaps extending from th-e upper and lateral'extremities of said body portion, to be .extended around the back of the wearer, detachable fastening means for fastening said flaps together in the back of the wearer, a pair of straps extending from the lower and lateral extremities of said body portion, vto be extended around the lower portion ofthe wearers legs and upwardly along the sides thereof, and means for detacliably securing said straps to ksaid body portions wliensaid straps are so ex tended; the lower edge of said body portion being notched.
In testimony whereof, l have signed my name to this specification.
