Description
R. A. WASHINGTON KNEE PROTECTOR Nov. 18, 1947.
Filed Jan. 4, 1946 5" 0 all INVENTOR. RoerfA. liar/{in m I ATTOR/VA'Y Patented Nov. 18, 1947 UNITED STATES QFFICE J I an PROTECTOR Robert A. Washington, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application January 4, 1946, Serial No. 638,986
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a knee protector.
More particularly, the invention proposes a knee protector which may be engaged around ones leg at, above, and below the knee.
Still further the invention proposes to characterize the knee protector by a strip of cloth of knitted, or other material, and provided with a slide fastener on the edge portions thereof for holding the same about ones knee.
Still further the invention contemplates providing the top and bottom portions of said strip of cloth with elastic strips for gathering and making the same form fitting.
Still further an arrangement is proposed which will prevent the slide fastener from directly contacting a wearer's skin.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an auxiliary pad mounted upon the cloth strip for further protecting the knee.
Another object of the invention is the construction of an article as mentioned which is simple and durable, and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a knee protector constructed in accordance with this invention.
. Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the knee protector illustrated in Fig. 1 butv shown in an open position and viewed from the back.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a bottom view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating a modified construction.
The knee protector, in accordance with this invention, includes a strip of cloth material l0 which may be made of ribbed material or other knitted types of material. This strip of cloth I0 is adapted to encircle a, persons leg at, above, and below the knee. A slide fastener H is mounted on the edge portions of the strip Ill for holding the strip in position on ones leg, as schematically illustrated in Fig. l, in which the dot and dash lines l2 indicate ones leg. This slide fastener H is of conventional construction, having the 2 Claims. (01. 128-165) A usual hook stringers H and ll attached upon the sides of the strip I0 and adapted to interengage each other in the usual way by the proper manipulation of a control slide H A guard strip [3 is mounted on the back and along one side of the strip ill for extending beneath the slide fastener, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4.
This guard strip is held in position by the line of stitches M which holds the stringer ll of the slide fastener in position.
Elastic strips l5 are mounted upon the top and bottom portions of the strip I0 for gathering and making same form fitting. These elastic strips l5 are secured within the top and bottom folded portions I6 of the strip I0. Lines of stitches I! hold the folded portions H5 in formation.
In Fig. 5 a modified form of the invention has been disclosed which distinguishes from the prior form in the fact that a pad l8 ismounted between the guard strip l3 and the other side of the strip to. This pad may be constructed of flannel or other protective material. The pad 18 is removably mounted upon the strip l3 by several snap fasteners 19, the co-operating parts of which are positioned upon guard strip [3 and the strip 10,
respectively. The other side of the pad I8 is provided with projecting elastic strips 2 I. The outer ends of these elastic strips 2| are provided with snap fasteners 22 which are cooperative with the edge portion of the strip ID for releasably securing these parts together.
The knee protector is intended to be worn during cold weather to keep the knees warm. However, it may be used for other reasons whenever protection for the knee i desirable. It is believed that the engagement and removal of the protector upon the leg is obvious without a detailed description thereof.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A knee protector, comprising a strip of cloth 3 a guard strip mounted on the back and along one side of said strip for extending beneath said slide fastener, and a pad mounted between said guard strip and the other side edge of said strip, one side of said pad being provided with snap fasteners cooperative with complementary snap fasteners mounted in said guard strip.
2. A knee protector, comprising a strip of cloth material adapted to encircle a person's leg across and above and below the knee, aslide fastener on the edge portions of said strip for holding the strip in position on ones leg, elastic strips 7 mounted'on the top and bottom portions of said strip for gathering and making same form flitting,"
a guard strip mounted on the back and along one side of said strip for extending beneath said slide fastener, and a pad mounted between said guard strip and the other side edge of said strip, one
side of said pad being provided with snap fase teners cooperative with complementary snap fas- 20 4 teners mounted in said guard strip, the other side of said pad being provided with projecting'elastic straps having snap fasteners cooperative with complementary snap fasteners upon the latter side edge of said strip.
