UNITED-STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. VANCE, o'r- COLUMBUS, onto.
OVERALLS.
Be .itknown that I, THOMAS W; VANCE}, a citizenof the United States, residing. Columbus, in" the county: of Franklin, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements 1 in .O eralls;-' and do hereby declare the following: to full,
clear, and exact description of the'invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it; appertains to make and'us'e the samej.
This invention relates't'o over-allsand moreespec ally to a combinat on "garment including a waist or jumper and trousers of the. open seam type and which-.1 term --"autor The primary object of my invention is to J provide'a garment of the above character in which the trousers will be formed with. open 'seams'so that theyfma'ybe fastened onfthe inside oroutside of theleg and fthus' permit the adjustment thereof quicklyfand easily over anyjstyleof trousers and yet leavethem.
smooth-and form'al' protection in use. I further object of them ent on is' to combinefth'e trousers with-a novelfoh'niofvv jumper With-an-apron, the garment; being especially adapted for; use by motor-ists and.
providing a cover for the. clothes in: case-"it- -bec omes necessary to make any repairs;v
v \Vith'the above and othe'r,ob eet s injvlcw.
' the invention consists of certain ot-herflcomr,
binations and arrangementsof parts, as will a. be-hereinaften more fully describedjand claimed, it being a still further" object ofthe invention toprovide-a device which will not be likely to get out of'workingorder.
In the drawings; Figure 1'is a front elevation of acomblnation-garmjent constructed in accordancewith my inve ntionpthe trousers. having open seams positioned at the outer sides of the legs. Fig; 2 is a rear ele-l ration thereof. Fig. 3 is -a' view similar to' Fig. 1 but shown with a pair of trousers 45.
having open seams located upon the insides of the legs and with a different. arrangement of pockets, the overhanging apron being folded upwardly, Fig.4 isa real-elevation of thetrousers shown in: the garment in Fig. i 3 of the drawings, v
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown my improved combination gap nient and in referring to. Figs. 1 aud2there' is shown a jumper 10 comprising a front section 11. a. back section 12 and sleeves 13} all of which are formed from a single. secs ecification 01f Letters Patent. P tent d A g 26 v Application filed ember 9,1911. serial No. 653,543;
. tion of material and provided with arcinf'orced binding 14 around the exposed edges v t-hereof. A neck 'openingl?) is formed in thesection between the arms and the .por-
tion thereof at the frontsection. of the umPer-isleft open as shownat 16 for the"- en'tra'nte; ofthe head therethroug'h, after which the; reinforced portionof' the -neck-'- fha'nd may be secured together by buttons. or
jotherf suitable fastening means 17 and a" pocket. 18', 1s alsoprovided up'on.the front section of the v jumper as shown.
Fron1. anYinspectionof the v drawings, it. will be seen that the sleeves 1'3 are formed *by'lateral extensions of the material form-2 ;,i1 1g the :front and back sections of the. jumper and that the same are formedw'ithi a seam 19'; at their lower edges a'nd that the back section is reduced in'size re'lat-iveto the front section, so that {the front section will fully cover the frontportion of the 1 body; shoulders and "so that sufficient room or: space will be left-between the side portions of the sections to permit free move "nient-of the arms and yet without exposing any parts of .the clothing whichwoi'i'ld he likely to be soiled. Straps-20 are connected to .thesides of the hack section '12 adjacent the lower end thereof and areadapte'd' to'be extended -around thefront' sectionand 1 downwardly inv an inclined position and-secur'edbyi buttonsor'other fasteners 2-1 and Itj'erminate above .the apron portion 22 of the. jumper which is secured to thet-rousers'of the garmentas shown at 23 whereby the apronwill overhang-the trousers, and -'fori'n an additional protection where the sameis,
most subject to wear;
2-1 and back sections 25 which-are suitably oined at the back and frontalong the inside and crotch \vliile the outer edgcsthereof are left open and providcdwvith a-surroundm reinforced bindurc it as shown; A
portion 29. the-back portion hcingprovided with extended ends 30 secured by fastening: means or buttons 31 while eaiih rear section is provided with extended tongues 33' which are formed therewith or attached therctoaud are of the required length to permitthe back sections to overlap the-front sections at the outer cdgcsthercofso that tlie'tongue.
may be. secured by similar fastening means The trousers shown in Figs.- 1 and '2 0fthe drawings are formed of front -s',ect1ons of the waist band.
31 used in connection with the extended ends It will also be noted that the lower tongue is longer than the upper tongue and is made adjustable as shall be as knee pads while the other pocket or pockets as shall be found desirable may serve for carrying tools and the like. A pair of straps or depending tongues 35 are provided at the lower edge of the back section of the jumper and are provided with fastening means SG-to besecured to the back portion of thewaist band 27 upon opposite sides of the central joining line of the-front and back sections of the .trousers, the front section of the jumper being connected to the front portion of the waist band and overhanging the front sections of the trousers for the purposehereinbefore set forth.
In the structure shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, the jumper. is of the same design while the trousers are formed. of
front and back sections of each leg of the trousers being connected at the outer sidesand formed at their innerfedges with openseams and with reinforced bindings 39 while the ,inner edges of the back sections are formed with extensions 40 which are secured in overlapped relation relative to the front sections, at. their inner edges by fastening means tl, theadjacent inner edges of the front sections being also secured together while the inner edges of the backsections are left open as shown at42 and are provided at the waist band 4:3 with securing means .44. Knee pockets 45 are also provided for the front-sections and upper sidecpockets 46 are secured 'to the outer edges of the front and rear sections for any desired purpose.
From the foregoing description in connecf tion with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that a very simple and etlicient form of combination garment of the cha-ract r named is provided which maybe espccia y desirable for the purposes stated and wherein the same may be readily secured on the body and will serve to properly protect the clothing without in any manner bunching the same, it being understood that the garments are to be made in such sizes that the adjustability of the leg sections will accomplish the; functions set forth.
1. Ina combination garment, a pair of trousers and a jumper secured tothe trousers, said jumper comprising a front section, back section and arms formed of a single piece of material and secured to the front" port-ion of the waist band of the trousers so as to overhang'the same to form an apron.
2. A body garment comprising a a frontsection, a backsection and sleeves formed of 'a single pieceof mater al, the sleeves comprising lateral extensions having their longitudinal edges in a neck opening formed in said sections between the arms and provided with a detachable closure and straps carried by the sides and lower edge ofthe back section to be secured around the front section and to the Waist band of a pair of trousers respectively. v
