Description
UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
THOMAS M. DENHAM AND EDWARD DENHAM, OFNEW BEDFORD, MASS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT-BOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,474, dated January 5, 1875 application led November 25, 1874,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS M. DENHAM and EDWARD DENHAM, copartners in business under the name of T. M. Denham & Brother, both of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ShirtBosoms; 4and we do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification. y
Very many thousand readymade shirtbosoms are made and sold every year to those who make or have made their shirts in the family at home, and one of the greatest perplexities to contend with to obtain a comfortable fitting garment is the shape and size of the neck. By our improvement we propose to remedy this difficulty as much as possible by attachinga simple graduated scale to each shirt-bosom, by which, with little trouble and no measurement, tting, or trying on, the eX- act size desired may be cut for the Whole neck of the shirt.
We are aware that shirt-besoins have been made with guides, graduated lines, Sac., .for the hollow or slope in the bosom or front of the neck. Such guides may in themselves be correct, provided the remainder of the necksize or sloping in the back part of the shirt be correctly out; but, to'any one observing, it will readily be seen that the portion of the hollovr or neck-slope cut from the bosom is only about one-third the whole length or size of the neck-hole or opening', and although the bosom may be cut of proper size and slope, the whole neck of the shirt 4may be spoiled by error in cutting the remaining twothirds of the neck-size-that is, the back and sides of the neck. Therefore, we propose by our invention to attach to each shirt-bosom a graduated scale (as seen in the annexed drawing) on the front of the bosom, in exact position for that portion of the neck that should be cut from the bosom, leaving a fly-leaf or graduated scale on the back, from which may be cut the remaining portion of the neckfrom the yoke or back of the shirt. This scale is so marked that any desired size neck may be obtained by cutting on the lines marked to indicate the size, and may be used on any kind or style of shirt, whether sack or yoke, openback or open-front, shirt.
In the annexed drawing, the outer edge of the shirt-bosom is indicated by the double lines marked by letters A the chart or graduated scale by dotted lines B. That portion of the scale within the heavy dotted lines, between the points G and B, and below the two upper points of the bosom A has graduated lines D, by which to cut out the desired size and slope from the bosom 5 and the upper portion ofthe chart, indicated by the lighter dotted lines, and included within the points B and C above the shirt-bosom, is marked with graduated lines E, by which to out out the desired slope for the remaining portion of the neck; that is, the yoke or back portion of the shirt; these lines, with corresponding numbers on the front and back, coming together form the required neck-size, length for seams being allowed in the scale.
Having-fully explained our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A shirt-bosom provided with the graduated scale D, by which to cut out the front neckpiece, and the graduated scale E, by which to cut out the rear neck-piece, substantially as described.
In witness whereof we have set oar hands and seals this 19th day oi' November, A. D.
