IMPROVEMENT IN COVERS FOR BUTT-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,237, dated December 29, 1874; application filed December 16, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. BLAKE, of
New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Cover for Butt-Hinge; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in the covers placed over butt-hinges to ornament the face and hide the screw-heads; and the invention consists in making the cover with an open-work tracery, so that when placed over the butt the surface of the butt will form a ground, and show through-the open-work of the cover, as more fully hereinafter described.
I make the cover from a flat plate, A, of the size of the leaves of the butt to be covered, and perforate the plate in any desired pattern or design. This is placed over the corresponding leaf of the butt, the surface of the butt showing through the open-work of the cover. This surface may be finished in any desirable color, and add materially to the ornamentation of the cover.
The cover may be made slightly larger than the butt, and secured at its edge directly to the wood, or may be secured to the butt in any of the known methods.
It is desirable that the open-Work through the cover should be made so that the solid portion will come over and hide the screwheads in the butt; or, if preferred, a thin plate or sheet may be placed between the surfaceof the butt and the cover, and that by its color or finish add to the effect of the ornamental cover.
I claim-- As an article of manufacture, the hereindescribed cover for butt-hinges, consisting of the plate A, perforated in ornamental. figures or tracery, substantially as described.
