Description

VHLUAM E. SNRKS Shutter Fasteners I No 5,495? Pmmdmawm.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM E. SPARKS, OF NENV HAVEN, UONNEUTIUUJ, A SSIGNOH TO SAlilll lNT (30., 0F SAME PLAUE.
DESIGN FOR SHUTTER-FASTENER.
Specification forming part of Design No. 5,495, dated January 23, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WLLLIAM E. SPARKs,of New Haven, in the county ot'New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Design for Shutter-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification and represents, in
Figure 1, a perspective View, and in Fig. 2 a longitudinal central section.
This invention relates to a design for that class of shutter-fasteners which are secured to one shutter and hook onto a bolt or keeper upon the other shutter, so that when closed both ends of the hook appear the same. In the illustration the hook only is shown, the object of the design being to make the hook reversible for either a right or left hand; at the same time present an ornamental surface. Therefore this design possesses a certain degree of utility.
As usually constructed the ornamentation is raised above the surface of the hook on one side, the other side being necessarily flat; eonsequently the hook cannot be reversed. This design consists in forming a sunken panel upon the hook, the edge of the panel being flush with the heads of the hook, so as to be ground or polished oil with the heads.
A is the head by which the hook is secured to one shutter; l, thehook which catches upon the bolt on the other shutter; the connecting-bar. The edges of this bar are made flush with the surface of the two ends. The renniinder of the surface of the bar is sunken to form a panel, and matted or otherwise finished; and, if desired, tracery may be placed thereon, substantially as shown in Fig. 1.
I claim as my invention The design for shutter-fastener, in which the bar has a sunken panel upon both sides, the edges flush, and finished with the ends of the fastener, as described.
WILLIAM E. SPARKS.
