This invention relates to a design for the ornamentation of the fronts of mortised locks and latches; and it consists in a raised tracery upon ailat matted surface, the said traeery being distant from the edge of the plate, so as to leave a margin entirely around the plate on a level with the other portions ofthe main surface, substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings, and as fully hereinafter described.
The front is constructed with openings for the bolts, according to the nature of the lock,
dated June 24, 1871i; application filed May 13, 187:1.
and with a screw-liole, a, at each end. The plate is ornamented by tracery projecting from the surface, and so as to leave a space between the tracery and the edge around the plate level with the other portion of the surface; the whole surface of the plate, except the tracery, matted, to give relief to the tracery. The tracery is polished and may be plated or otherwise finished.
It will be understood that the matted surface is fiat or level throughout, including the space outside the tracery to the edge ot' the plate, and that the ornamentation projects therefrom, as seen in Fig. 2.
The particular style ot traccry is no part of' this design, as that may be varied according to the taste of the manufacturer or demands of the trade.
I claim as my invention- The design for lock-front, as herein described, and shown in the accompanying illustration.
