Description

March 25 1924. 154885133 B. J. RICKER GLOVE Aorg MITTEN STRUCTURE F1195 April 12 1923 Patented Mar. 25, i924.
narran srArEs BENJAMIN J. RICKER, OF GR'INNELL, IOWA.
GLOVE 0R- IVIITTEN STRUCTURE.
Application filed April 12, 1923.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. RIGKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of`Gr'iiinell, in the county of Poweshiek and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new andV useful Glove or Mitten Structure, of which the following is a. specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a glove or mitten structure of simple and inexpensive construction.
More particularly, it is my object'to provide such a device, having a structure including an outer member, having a hand portion and a gauntlet portion, and an in ner member or lining, the parts being so connected that the inner or lining member will be properly supported in the outer member free from connection therewith at the wrist portion and provided with an elastic element for causing the lining to snugly tit the wrist of the wearer.
lVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and comb-ination of the various parts of my device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a glove embodying my invention; and
Figure Q shows a front elevation of the same, parts being broken away and parts being shown in section.
It is desirable in a glove or mitten, which may have a hand and a gauntlet portion or a hand and a wrist protecting portion to provide some means whereby the wrist portion may be drawn snugly around the wrist of the wearer, so as to prevent the entrance of cold air into the hand portion and to secure a snug fit, while at the same time not breaking or interfering with the wrist or gauntlet portion.
The usual method is to provide, at least with gauntlet gloves and mittens, a strap and fastener or some equivalent device for drawing the flexible portion of the glove, between the hand portion and the gauntlet, snugly around the wrist of the wearer. Frequently such strap o1 other device tends when in use to distort or break the gauntlet.
I have provided a new arrangement and structure of parts for accomplishing the Serial No. 631,629.
general purpose mentioned without being subject to the defects of former methods.
In the accompanying drawings, I have shown the hand portion 10 of a glove, having secured thereto a gauntlet ll. The hand portion 10 and gauntlet 11 constitute the outer member.
The outer member is provided with a warm lining, which consists of the hand portion 12 and the gauntlet or wrist por tion 13.
The outer o1' open end of the gauntlet portion 13 of the lining member is secured to the edge of the gauntlet portion 11 of the outer membell at the open end thereof, so as to give a firm and neat fastening, as at 14.
The other parts of the lining may be left free from attachment to the outer member.
The hand portion 12 of the glove or mitten lining is provided at the wrist with an elastic element 15 adapted to cause such portion of the lining to draw snugly around the wrist of the wearer of the article.
The hand portion 12 may be secured to the .auntlet portion 13 along the sea-m 16, whic is somewhat exaggerated in the drawing for pur-poses of illustration.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a structure, which can be used in gloves or mittens in which a wrist protecting member or a full gauntlet may be formed on or secured to the hand portion, and the outer member may be provided with a warm lining, which will always snugly engage the wrist of the wearer.
Since the lining is free from any fastening to or connection with the outer member at the wrist portion and is provided there with the elastic element, it will be seen that the lining: member will snugly hug the wrist of the wearer, whenever the glove or mitten is in use.
At the same time, my improvement herein shown does away with the necessity for providing straps or fasteners on the outer member, and by doing away with them, reduces the cost of manufacture, by effecting a saving in the materials and in the number of operations necessary for making the product.
The gauntlet and wrist portion of the outer member may always retain their proper shapes and will never be wrinkled or distorted by fastening stra-ps or the like,
and will better retain their appearance and wear longer than if drawstraps were used. No air can pass into the hand portion of the glove or mitten because the lining meniber always snugly fits the Wrist of the wearer. The glove or mitten is especially Warm at the wrist because a cold insulating space 17 is provided bet-Ween the lining and the outer member, not only at the Wrist proper, but for a considerable distance toward -the open end of the zgauntlet and toward the hand portion of the glove.
Changes may be made in the details of the construction ot my improved glove or mitten without departing; from the spirit and purpose ot my invention, and it is niy intention to cover by my claims, any modilied forms ol structure or use ot mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably ineluded Within the scope of my` invention.
I claim:
l. Adeviceof the class described, comprising an outer element, having a hand portion and a wrist covering port-ion7 a lining for said outer element secured to the outer element but free from securing connection with the outer-element at its Wrist portion, said lining having` an elastic element for causingit to snugly dran7 around the Wrist of the wearer.
2. In a device of the class described, an outer element comprising a hand portion, a gauntlet thereon, a lining: secured to the edge of said gauntlet at the -open end thereof and free 'from connect-ion at the wrist with the outer element, said lining having an elastic element at the Wrist.
Des Moines, Iowa. January 23, 1923;
