In such re1arial is used in the making of the mitten, whether tionship and normal use, the slot is closed by the of knitted or woven fabric or of leather, but movement of the slide to the left from the position slot. In thus projecting the fingers, the free edge of the inner flap I0 is automatically forced outwardly through the slot thus covering the upper or outer zipper 2 which without theap would otherwise be engaged by the back of the hand'.
When the fingers are withdrawn from. the slot I to the interior of the mitten both flaps normally tend to cover the slot.
It is therefore to be realized that where the 'l user occasionally requires use ofthe fingers in the grasping or manipulation of an element, such as a fishing reel, the trigger of a, gun or other element or apparatusthemitten is worn with the slot open to enable the fingers to be readily projected through the slot for a required use and then withdrawn from the slot untilagain required-to be projected. The hands of the user are lthus at all times protected from cold except the period during which the fingersv may be projected from .p
the slot. The mitten may b evused with the slot closed for any considerable period of time in which the fingers are not required to beprojected and under such condition the zipper may be closed or may be left open as the flaps cover the slot and `by positioning the slot transversely of the palm practically centrally thereof, the zipper lies within the palm and is not detrimental or materially noticeablein grasping any object that does not require the 4use of `the fingers specifically. For instance, in the carrying of a gun to and from a huntingarea the zippers may be closed and the gun handled readily as the zipper lies in the portion of the hand that would not interfere with the movement of the fingers as a whole in grasping an object. The feature of the invention, therefore, resides in the provision of a slot transversely of the palm of "the mitten on a line lying within the palm of the hand andthe slot is normally closed by the opposed aps. The zipper 3 toward the tip of the mitten lies closely adjacent to the mitten fabric forming the outer edge of the slot and thus toa degree prevents wear ofthe fabric by frequent movement of the ngers through the slot and, when the zipper strips are in open position, the inner flap I0 covers the outer zipper strip and protects the hand of the user.
It is pointed out, however, that 'the invention is not confined to the use of an inner flap, such as the flap |0 shown, as the mitten is usable without such a nap. However the outer ilap 8 is considered essential otherwise snow and moisture might pass into the interior of the mitten 'even though the zipper strips be closed. The invention broadly, therefore, exists in the provision of the slot having the opposed zipper strips at the edges thereof and the metallic elements at the opposite ends of the vslot located transversely and substantially centrally of the palm of the hand of the user so that in gripping an object the zipper strips do i not interfere with the handling of the object by the hand covered by the mitten.
It is further pointed out that the outer nap 8 is of considerable Width on a line longitudinally of the palm and is preferably rounded at the ends and preferably is an integral part of the portion of the mitt towards the wrist. The flap, due to its not being secured at its ends to the mitten fabric, is thus readily 'turned either to cover or uncover the zipper strips; i I
From the foregoing description it is believed evident that the various objects and novel features of the invention are attained by the structural arrangement of parts as described and that various changesmay be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described our invention, its utility and mode of construction, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United -States is:
l. A mitten having a front and a back of suitable .material attached. together at peripheral edges, said front having a transverse opening a substantially centrally of the palm providing edge portions inthe same plane, a zipper strip on each edge of the openingmetallically secured together at the opposite ends, a slide for opening or closing the zipper strips, rvand a flap on each side of said opening normally overlying the said opening and zipper strips.
2. A mitten having a front and a back attached together, the front .being in two parts providing a transverse opening substantially centrally of the palm and. providing oppositely extending flap portionscovering the opening, a zipper strip at the base of each of the opposed faces of the aps and normally lyingf in parallel relation, and a. slide movable across the zipper strips to open or close the same.
3. A mitten havinga front and a back attached together, the front being in two parts each having a ap portion, said nap portions being in overlapping relationship and each unattached at its opposite ends to the back, a zipper strip on the outer face of the inner flap, and a complementary zipper strip on the inner face of the outer flap, the two strips normally lying in edge to edge relation in the same plane, and a slide for opening or closing the zipperstrips.
