Be itI known that l, Grier-ion i. donneurs, a citizen of the United States, and a residentof the borough of Brooklyn, counts,rv of Kings, city and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fuel-Oil-Spray Burners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my improvements is the production of a simple but practical device by means of which fuel oil may be effectually disintegrated by, and combined with, an air or steam blast for injection into a furnace, or the like; and the invention consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts described and claimed,-the distinctive feature being the provision of convergent supply ducts in the valve casing by means of which the oil and the air or steam are caused to impinge and merge in a common duct by which latter the dilution thus attained is injected into a nozzle of relatively large area in cross section adapted to function as both a blending and a compression chamber,the latter being formed with a constricted discharge orifice through which the compressed Jduid admixture is ejected in the form of a finely atomized spray, thereby insuring perfect combustion, eliminating carbonization, etc., all as hereinafter fully set forth.
The accompanying drawing represents a sectional elevation of my improved fuel oil burner, in which N, is the blending and compression chamber and nozzle, all these three functions being combined in one,the cross section of the main portion of said nozzle N, being relatively large as compared with the inlet i, thereto in the valve casing C, and the discharge end or nose of the nozzle N, being formed with a con'- stricted outlet n, smaller than said inlet a', so as to effect the compression of the oil vapor and its gaseous vehicle within the elongate chamber a', prior' to the ejectment thereof through said constricted discharge outlet n.

manner well known in the art, being positioned in valve chan'ibe'rs 0, and g, provided respectively with ducts 0', and Q',-the first named (0") communicating` with the fuel oil supply, and the other (g) connecting with the gaseous pressure vehicle supply. The novelty in this respect in the present case consists (in conjunction with my blending and compression nozzle N) in forming the casing C, with convergent ducts o2, and g2, extending from the valve seats to a common conduit cx, leading to the inlet z', before referred to, and interposed between said convergent ducts o2, and g2, and the said entrance c', to the nozzle N, as indicated clearly in the drawing.
By this specific construction and arrangement of parts the fuel oil and its gaseous vehicle are caused to impinge inthe passage 0X, Dreparatory to introduction into the elongate chamber n, of the nozzle N, in which, owing to the constricted discharge orifice n, the comminuted and attenuated oil with its gaseous vehicle are further blended and compressed preparatory to ejectment through said orifice a, the resultant dis charge being in the form of a fine vaporous spray which is highly inflammable,-the atomization effected being so thorough and complete as to insure perfect combustion of the fuel.
l have found by actual experience thatby the employment of a burner, so called, of this construction, I not only attain prac tically perfect consumption of the oil, but also that with a. discharge orifice a, of approXimately one thirty second of an inch, and a gaseous vehicle under suitable pressure, l am enabled to attain a flame six feet or more in projective length, which is advantageous in connection with certain purposes and conditions of use. l
lt is to be noted in this connection that the constricted discharge orifice n, of the blending and compression nozzle N, is of less area in cross section than the inlet i, to the relatively large elongate chamber fa, in said nozzle member of the combination.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
