Description

. OIL BURNER Filed Aug. 9, 1937 Patented Feb. 21, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to an attachment for oil burners, the general object of the invention being to provide a nozzle device connected with the air source of the. burner for delivering air into the combustion chamber adjacent the burner nozzle.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accom.-
panying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an oil burnerequipped according to my invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section illustrating the manner in which the burner is applied to a furnace, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in section illustrating the adjustable tongue of the invention. In the drawing, the numeral I indicates the blower fan housing of a gun type burner and the numeral 2 the usual air blast nozzle which has the oil passage 3 therein and the air passage 4, the air passing through the passage 4 atomizing the oil issuing from the passage 3. These parts are of usual construction. The described structure also includes a main air discharge conduit 5 which has a reduced part 6 leading therefrom into the nozzle 2 and forming an air blast conduit through which the primary air passes from the conduit 5 to the nozzle 2. As will be understood the described burner is designed to be inserted in the combustion chamber C of a furnace F.
In carrying out my invention I provide a hose 'l of adjustable construction and terminating in a nozzle 8, the hose being connected to the duct 5.
An adjustable tongue 9 is located at the point of junction of the parts 6 and 1 so as to regulate the amount of air passing through the two parts. The nozzle 8 may be of any suitable shape so as to produce any desired air motion and it can be adjusted with respect to the nozzle of the member 2. The hose l and nozzle 8 are designed to be inserted in the combustion chamber.
This member l and 8 will introduce into the combustion chamber of a furnace the air necessary for combustion and by adjusting it and using the nozzle 8 this secondary air can be introduced at any desired location and in the shape or forml best suited for the particular combustion chamber in which it is used.
With this invention the combustion roar occurring in devices of this kind, is substantially eliminated and the operation of the burner isimproved as the flame can be suited to the combustion chamber.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimedV as new is:-
An oil burner for insertion in the combustion chamber of a furnace comprising an air blast nozzle, means for spraying iuel into air discharged from the air blast nozzle, a blower, a main discharge conduit extending therefrom, a by-pass conduit branching from said discharge conduit to the air blast nozzle, a flexible `hose forming a continuation of the main discharge conduit and having a nozzle thereon for insertion at will in the combustion chamber and in different loca.- tions therein to discharge air in different directions into the combustion chamber, and an adjustable tongue in the main discharge conduit at the juncture therewith of the branch conduit for varying the amount of air passing through said branch conduit and hose.
