Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 20, 1922.
Application filed October 29, 1921. Serial No. 511,408.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MYnoN B. HAM- MOND and HENRY H. TAYLOR, both citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mens Garters; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in garters, and the primary object thereof is to provide a separable garter wherein the elastic webbing is secured at one end to a non-elastic pad, and wherein the complementary members of the clasp are carried by the pad and the end portion of the elastic webbing thereby rendering it unnecessary to provide a special non-elastic tongue at the end of the webbing.
A further object of the invention is to provide an elastic webbing which adjustably carries one of the clasp members` A still further object of the invention is to provide a garter construction, wherein one of the clasp members is affixed to the nonelastic pad at any suitable location and always maintains the pad smooth and devoid of wrinkles so as to cause the latter to closely and snugly conform itself to the leg throughout the extent of the pad'.
The invention also aims to simplify and reduce the cost of production of the garter, while still providing a construction wherein the metal parts are held free of all contact with the leg of the wearer.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a front elevation of one form of our invention;
Figure 2 isA a section on line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4f is a top plan view of the female member of the clasp.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a section of elastic webbing l is employed having one end thereof rigidly secured to one end 2 of a non-elastic pad 3,
the ends of the latter being each of substantially the same width as that of the elastic webbing. The opposite end of the non-elastic pad 3 has the female member of a clasp rigidly secured thereto, preferably by spurs 5 which are struck out from the flat body 6 of the female member and are clinched into engagement with the pad end, the outer edge of said body substantially coinciding with said end, while the body itself is Cltpproximately of the same width as said en The body 6 has its sides flanged at 7 and inclined toward each other both laterally and longitudinally of the body.
rThe male member of the clasp has sides 8 which are similarly inclined so as to conformably and slidably be engageable with the flanges 7 to thereby connect and disconnect the clasp members.
The body 9 of the male member is approximately of the same width as that of the elastic webbing and has transverse parallel and spaced slots l0 of a length correspending` to the width of the webbing l, the latter being threaded through the slots so that the parts of the webbing engage both the upper and lower faces of the body and permit of adjustment of the male member along the length of the opposite end 1l of the elastic webbing. Y
lt will be noted that the female member of the clasp is secured closely to the eXtremity of the free end of the non-elastic pad, and that, since the body 6 thereof is as wide as the pad end and substantially coincides with. the latter, and is flat and firmly secured to said end, the latter is consequently reenforced and, furthermore, held fiat and prevented from wrinlzling or crumpling throughout its width, as distinguished from similar garters in which the clasp members occupy comparatively only a small portion of the width of the pad and webbing.
The pad carries the usual hose supporter clasp 12.
That is claimed is In a garter, an elastic webbing, a nonelastic pad having a pair of ends each of approximately the same width as that of the elastic webbing and having one of said width as that of the free end of the pad and is secured to the latter so as to Substantially Coincide With the free edge thereof.
n testimony whereof We aiiix our signature hereto.
MYRON B. HAMMOND. HENRY H. TAYLOR.
