Be it known that we, MYnoN B. HAMMOND and HENRY H. TAYLOR, citizens of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, Fairfield county, Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mens Garters; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hose supporters but relates more particularly to what are known as cast off hose supporters which are adjustable as to the limb encircling part thereof, and are provided with clasp membersto hold said part in place, one of said members being cast off the other member for the re moval of the limb encircling part.

The primaiy object of the invention is to provide an adjustable hose supporter of the cast 011' type wherein all of the metal parts of the clasping and adjusting means are carried on the outside of a non-elastic partof the garter and consequently cannot come into contact with the leg of the wearer. thus avoiding the objectionable effects of these metal parts which heretofore have been not only uncomfortable by pressing into and against the flesh, but also are subject to rust resultant from perspiration.

A further object of the invention is to provide a supporter wherein the cast off means for securing the ends of the leg encircling element is so organized and operated as to be adjustable so as to increase or decrease the size of the garter. while all parts of the adjusting and securing means are supported on the outer face of a nonelastic pad or part so as not to be capable of engaging the leg of the wearer.

In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, an elastic limb encircling member 1, is employed to one end of which a non-elastic pad 2 is secured, the latter carrying the usual clasp 3 which engages the similar view on line 3-3 Specification of Letters Patent.

stocking. The opposite end of the member 1, has a non-elastic part 4 to which a nonelastic tongue 5, is secured. The parts 2, 4 and 5 may be formed of leather, though any other suitable or preferred material may be used instead.

Rigidly secured to the outer face of the clasp-bearing member 2, is the female member 6 of a separable clasp, the member 6 being preferably secured at an angle as shown to the vertical axis of the member 2, and may be secured in position by stitching or any other suitable or preferred manner. The male member 7 of the separable clasp, is adjustably carried by the tongue 5 and is slidably engaged with the female member 6, the adjustment for example being by means of slots 8, through which the tongue 5 is threaded.

It will now be seen that the members 6 and 7 can be easily connected and disconnected by sliding movement of the male with respect to the female member and that each of said members is now carried by or arranged on the outer face of the claspbearing member 2, so that the latter acts to prevent any possible contact with the leg of the wearer and consequently same cannot press against or dig into the flesh nor directly be subjected to perspiration.

The members 6 and 7 preferably have a wedge shaped or tapering form so that same are wedged into engagement with each other, though the invention is not restricted to the exact type of separable and adjustable fastener depicted in the drawings. These members are, it will be noted, not directly associated with the limb encircling part of the supporter, but are, when clasped, carried on the outer face of an inelastic part of the limb encircling webbing. It is also to be observed that one of the clasping members itself and alone forms the means by which the size of the limb encircling part can be increased or decreased as desired, or, in other words, no third metal or other part is required in order to provide for adjustment and securement of the limb encircling part.

he invention therefore provides not only an adjustable limb encircling member, but also provides a cast-off garter wherein the detachable clasping member is itself the sole means for adjusting the size or length of the leg encircling member, while in clasping position both members of the clasp are wholly carried on the outside of a nonelastic member.

Thus, regardless of the position occupied by the member 7 along the length of the tongue 5 such member, when operatively connected to the member held by the latter out of any possible engagement with the leg of the wearer.

The style of the clasp members is immaterial since the gist of the invention resides in they broad idea of permanently securing one of the clasping members to the outer face of the non-elastic pad while the other of these members is adjustably carried by the cast-off partof the garter, So that when these members are engaged, all metal parts will be supported on the outside of the nonelastic pad, but the form of clasp element shown and described is preferred, since the angular arrangement of the female member of the clasp insures the holding of the tongue at an angle corresponding to that which the ends of the limb encircling. member assume.
