Description
J. A. HEWES.
GARTER.
APPHCATION mm) JULY 3 ,1919.
EPatented Feb. 1, 192
UNITED STATES JAMES A. HEWES, OI! MELROSE, MASSACHUSETTS.
GARTER.
Application filed July 3, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. Hnwns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garters, and has for its object the provision of a device of this type wherein contact between certain metal portions thereof and the person of the wearer is prevented by more efficient, simple and economical means than heretofore employed in the art.
The device of my invention comprises a leg encircling band including a pad secured thereto, a depending member secured to the pad and provided with a hose fastener, and a two part clasp for coupling the ends of said band, the novel features and relations of which elements are hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, and shown in the drawing accompanying this specification.
Referring to the drawing in which Figure 1 shows my new and improved garter with the band clasp uncoupled, and Fig. 2 shows the same with the band clasp coupled, and like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures, the numeral 3 indicates a leg encircling band of elastic fabric. 4 is the pad stitched to the band 3 and 5 the depending member provided with the hose supporter 6 stitched to the pad. 7 is a clasp member of metal or other suitable material stitched or otherwise suitably secured to the pad 4:. 8 is a clasp member adapted to engage the member 7, and provided with two parallel longitudinal slots 9, adapted to receive and frictionally secure the end 10 of the band 3 in the manner shown and thus permit adjustment of the band 3 to the desired length. The member '7 is secured to the pad 4 at a point sufficiently removed from the free end 11 of the pad to interpose the pad between the leg of Specification of Letters Patent.

the wearer and all portions of the members 7 and 8, thus preventing contact of the metal parts of the clasp with the leg.
In all prior devices of this class the means for adjusting the length of the band is independent of the band clasp, and in adjustment is moved along the band relatively to the clasp. The result is that as the adjust ment is made to take up the slack of the band due to stretching of the fabric, the band is folded upon itself causing a double thickness of the garter to that extent and as the garter continues to stretch the adjusting means finally reaches a point back of the knee in an uncomfortable position for the wearer. By constructing the adjusting means integral with the clasp in my device its position is unchanged in taking up the slack of the band and therefore is prevented from getting into the uncomfortable position back of the knee. The double thickness of the webbing is also avoided as the superfluous portions of the end of the fabric may be cut off as it is taken up.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A garter embodying a le encircling band of elastic fabric one end of which is turned outwardly and backwardly upon itself and is embraced and secured against slipping solely by a frictional member of a two part clasp, the other end of said band having a non-elastic pad secured thereto and provided with the complementary member of the two part clasp fastened to the pad at such distance inwardly from the edge that the pad is interposed between both members of the clasp and the body of the wearer when the clasp is closed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses, this twenty-first day of June, 1919.
