SUSPENSORY.
Patented July 27,1920.
Application filed January 3, 1918. serial 'No. 210,210.
To all whom it may. concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN A. MARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Newark, county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspensories, of which the following is a full and clear specification.
My inveutionrelates to improvements in anatomical suspensories, and particularly to that class of suspensories intended for the support of the scrotum. A
The main object of the present invention is to improve suspensory supporters in a manner to niakethem light, strong, durable an d easily applied and maintained in proper position and also more sanitary, that is so that the several parts comprising the. sus pensory can be detached one from the other and the parts requiring renewal or cleansing readily handled for that purpose.
Another object of the invention is to so arrange and connect the several parts that they can be worn either under or over an undergarment, this being a matter wholly within the liking of the wearer.
With these and other objects, I have devised and arranged, a suspensory of the character described that will meet all. the present requirements, as will be hereinafter fully described in detail and the features of merit and novelty pointed out in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved suspensory arranged and connected in manner as applied to the wearer.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, part of the band being broken away.
Fig. 3 is a detail showing how the clasps are secured to the leg or crotch straps.
Fig. is a detail of the ends of the crotch straps showing a loop for connecting said straps to the sack.
Fig. 5 is a front elevationon a smaller scale showing how the suspensory is applied over an undergarment.v
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 is the waistband which is adapted to encircle the body and support the several parts comprising the suspensory. This band is usually made of some elastic material and joined by any suitable means, such as a buckle, clasp or as here shown, by means of snap fasteners. 2 is a semicircular member made of some firm material, such as leather or the like, and is detachably fastened to the waistband by means of a'clasp 3, The member 2 is provided with loops 5 through which pass and by which held an elastic loop 6. This loop is preferably made 7 of rubber tubing and has secured in the ends thereof clasps 6. The sack is shown at 10 and may be of any suitable fabric or' web bing best suited. for the purpose. It is shaped as shown inFigs. 1 and 2 to give the best supporting conditions for the scro tum. The frontal opening 12 for the penis is properly'located and preferably bound with a soft tape, as shown at 13. The upper part of the sack has a yoke 15 of firmer fabric than the sack material fastened thereto and in turn said yoke is provided at its top with a strong piece of material 16, such as leather, canvas or the like and to which in any desirable manner are fastened clasp buttons 17. These buttons are adapted. to be engaged by the clasps- 6 carried by loop 6.
he leg or crotch straps 20 can be made of any desired material but I have shown them as made of rubber tubing. Secured to the upper ends of said straps, as hereinafter described, are clasps' 21 which pass over and engage buttons 22 on the waistband 1. I have provided two sets of buttons 22 so that a desirable tension and adjustment of said straps 20 can be made. The lower ends of the leg straps are fastened to an eye25 as shown in Fig. 4:, said eye in turn attachedto a hook 26 fastened to the bottom of the sack, as shown in Fig. 2. This may be any kind of a standard hook, such for instance as the well known hump hook or the like so that the straps can be readily detached from the sack but willv under normal conditions remain attached.
g The leg or crotch strap 20 I prefer to make of standard rubber tubing thereby giving a more sanitary and at the same time .more comfortable support. By using rubber tubing I am also enabled to make a crotch strap that can be altered to fit and suit the wearer. The clasp 21 is secured to the tubing 20 by having the free ends 21' of said clasp capable of engaging each other at the extreme ends an'd-bent'to form a loop 21 near said ends- The ends of the clasp are contracted between the loop 21 'and the large opening of the clasp as shown at 21". Thus it will be seen that when the free ends of the clasp are forced into the tubing the loop 21 will tend to expand the same, and continued movement of the tubing over as here shown it will be securely held against any strain it will be subjectedto in retaining the sack in desired position. By
fastening the clasp to the tubing in this manner" the wearer is enabled to readily make alterations in the lengthof the tubing by simply removing the; clasp, cutting off a portion of the tubing and relnserting the clasp in the manner shown and described.- The clasps-G may be fastened to loops 6 1nthe same manner as clasps2l are fastened to the straps 20. In Fig. 4 I have SllOWIl'lIl dotted lines a modified manner of forming the free end of the loop25'to the tubing 20,
the result however beingthe same. It can be readily understood that the manner of enlargin'gthe free ends of the clasp so that they will be retained within the tubing? can be varied to best suit the :form of clasp to beemployed. a x
In Fig. I have shown the suspensory "in position to be applied to the wearer-with part of the same over and part under-an undergarment. In this. application it will be noticed that waistbandl and thenumber 2 are on the outside of the undergarme'nt 30, while the sack 10 is underneath the same and directly engaging thescrotum: The clasps' 6' engagethebuttonsl'? on the yoke of the sack through the undergarment, thereby holding it in place" inzthe same manner as shown in Fig. 1; .The erotch'straps.
or tubes pass around the thighs over the undergarment and are free to be fastened to the waistband 1n the same as shown 1n Fig. 1. Thus it will be seen that'in'order to I'GIHOVQ'lZhG suspensory and the under-' garment, clasp 3 is unfastened from the waistband, clasps 21 on the crotch straps from buttons 22, and waistband 1 unfastened and the undergarment" removed still having attached thereto the sack, memher 2 and crotch straps ortubesQO. It will be further noticed that when the undergarment is again placedonthe wearer the the undergarment, the main difference being that the buttons 17 are directly engaged by clasps 6" insteadof including the interposed undergarment.
By arranging and constructing a suspensory in the manner hereindescribed, I am able to replace any and all parts when worn out orbroken and also remove the parts for necessary cleansing, thereby keeping the suspensory in a desirable condition of usefulness. I I
By having the abdominalmember 2 capable of being detached-from the waistband and the sack, I am enabled to give the wearer the choice' of wearing the suspensory either partly over the undergarment or wholly under the undergarment; thereby making a condition of adjustment and comfort in wearing optional with--the wearer.
Of course it should be understood that the relativeproportions and shapes of the several elements canbevaried to suit-the conditions and requirements demanded in the constructionofmyinvention: I claim: 7 1. A suspensor-y comprising a flexible waistband, a v sack; amember intermediate to said waistband and sack, anfelastic element freely supportedby said intermediate m'e1n 'ber, claspson the free ends of said elastic element for engaging and holding the sack, a waistband'claspfor fastening the intermediate member to the waistband, whereby said intermediate member can be 'detached from the waistband;and crotch-straps detachably fastenedto 'thelower'edge of the sack and their freeends-capable of being detach ably engagedby the waistband.
2. A suspensory comprising a waistband,
a sack, crotch straps of rubber tubing; and clasps having one end of enlarged formation, capable when forced within thetubing of expanding said tubing in a manner to be retained in desired position and said clasps adapted to detachably engage the waistband andlsackfi 1 w 3; Asuspensory comprisinga waist band, a sack, crotch straps'composed of rubber tubing, and eyelet joining-two ends of said tubing and adapted todetaehably engage the sack, and Clasps retained within the open ends of said tubing for detachably engaging the waistband.
4." A suspensory comprising a waistband, a sack, means for unitingisaid parts; crotch straps composedof" rubber tubing, and clasps forniedin a mannento be thrust into the opening in said tubing. and be retained in desired position by'the-pressure of the tubing'on the clasp".
