N. w. PARKE GARTER Filed Dec. 15, 22
New: I:
TLW PaPk Patented Mar. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES NEWTON W. PARKE, OF BROOK, INDIANA.
GARTER.
Application filed December 15, 1922. Serial No. 607,148.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON W. PARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brook, in the county of Newton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in garters.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a relatively simple garter embodying certain features set forth in my co-pending application Serial Number 532,312, filed January 27, 1922, and including novel features rendering the same of practical merit.
A- further object of this invention is the provision of a garter constructed in such manner as to assume the most comfortable position upon the leg of a user, in that the same may readily flex and assume a proper position, preventing unnatural binding or tension, so that hose may be supported in the most effective manner.
A further object of this invention is the provision'of a garter of the above mentioned character, which includes a leg encircling band, and a hose supporting member of novel construction and cooperation with respect to said band.
' Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form ofimproved garter, showing the cooperating details thereof.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary View showing the relative sizes of certain parts of the leg encircling band and hose supporting parts of this invention.
Fig. 4 is an inside elevation of the leg encircling band and hose supporting parts of the improved garter, showing their connection.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred form of the invention, the letter A designates the improved garter, as a whole; C a leg enhose supporting lie the band 20; thus providing the bodyportion 24, which is annular in arrangement, and upon the inside surfaces of which the end portions 21 and 22 overlie. Buckles 25, of metal formation are preferably provided for connection of the end portions 21 and 22 to the adjacent. body portion 24, whereby said end portions 21 and 22 are securely and adjustably affixed to the body portion 24 to provide a permanently closed band 20, which is adapted for slipping over the foot and upon the leg of the user to effect the support of the hose. In connection with the affixing of the extreme portions of the ends 21 and 22, it is to be .noted. that the same are afiixed to the central barportion 27 of the buckles 25, as to inwardly overlie said central bar portions 27, so that the frame of said buckles are exteriorly of the enclosed retaining band 20. and no part of the buckles are exposed inwardly of said loop, as is well illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings.
The construction of the band C is such as to make the-same elastic; the elastic lengths being preferably cxteriorly covered by fabric, threads, or the like, of flexible character, and in annular manner about said retaining band C preferably to provide the ribs 30, which extend laterally both interiorly and exteriorly of the retaining band C, as is illustrated in the drawings. This construction permits of the elastic expansion and contraction of the permanently closed retaining band C. However, the band may be adjusted independent of its elastic feature, by means of adjustment of the buckles 25, in conformance with this fea ture as described in my co-pending application above referred to.
Referring to the hose supporting deviceis D. a pair of the same are preferably pro vided upon each leg encircling band C. The
device D preferably includes a strip 35 of elastic material, preferably of the same material as the elastic leg encircling band C, and preferably providing ribs 37 which extend laterally This band is bent upon itself, at its upper end, to provide a loop 38, the opening 39 of which receives the band C in slidable adjustable manner. The terminal of the strip 35, in providing this loop 38, is adjustably and detachably engaged by a rectangular shaped buckle 40, providing means whereby the opening 39 of the loop 38 may be extended or contracted, as desired. .The lower end of the strip 35 is likewise bent upon itself, to provide a loop opening 41 which receives the O-shaped metal loop 42 thcrethrough; the same being a portion of the stocking or hose engaging clasp 43. This lower portion of the strip 35, which is looped to provide the opening 41, is retained upon the body portion 44 of the strip 35, in adjustable manner, as by means of a buckle 46, altogether similar to the construction of buckles 25' and above referred to.
The clasp 43 preferably includes a flexible non-elastic protecting strip 50, having a stud 51 upon the lower end thereof. The receiving member 52 may be provided, de pending from the loop 42, and extending along the exterior surface of the strip for cooperation with the stud 51, in receiving a portion of the hose or stocking, in the well known manner.
In this arrangement of the strip 35,"it is to be noted that the ribs 37 of the strip 35 are in intersecting relation with the circumferential run-of the ribs 30 of the leg encircling band C, preferably being disposed at exactly right angles thereto. The frictional engagement of these intersecting ribs 30 and 37 will prevent too free annular adjustment of the device D upon the leg encircling band C. A further important feature is the fact that'the loo ed opening 39 which receives the width 0 the encircling band C may be contracted, so that the band C is slightly compressed at its edges, substantiallyas is shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, to furnish an additional safeguard, preventing lateral shift of the hose supporting device D about the leg encircling band C, after once having been properly positioned.- The arrangement of the various details of the hose supporting device D, prevents any contact of the metal with the leg of the user, as is obvious from the-cross sectional view of Figure 2. The preferred relation of the loop opening 39 with respect to the width of the encircling'band C is well illustrated in on both sides thereof, and longitudinally thereof.
Figure 3 of the drawings, which shows the band prior to its threading through the loop garter readily conforms to muscular movement of the users leg, and the contour thereof, without binding. Thls is in contradlstinction to the provislon of dissimilar cooperating elastic and inelastic portions provided upon ordinary forms of garters. In this connection it should also be noted that the leg encircling band C is a permanently closed band for slipping over the foot and upon the le of the user. The hose supporting devices 15 are, of course, adj ustable circun'iferentially about the annular leg encircling band C, so that the user may place them at the desired position for hose supporting purposes. The fact that binding of the garter parts upon the leg of the user is limited, is important, not only from a standpoint of durability of the garter itself, but does not obstruct blood circulation in the leg or limb of the user, as is invariably found in ordinary forms of garters. The strip 35 of the hose supporting device D may be readily detached and renewed,,without destruction of the metal'and clasp portions thereof.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of garter herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of this invention or the scope of the claim.
I claim:
A garter comprising an elastic leg encircling band and hose supporting devices ad j'ustable on said band each including an elastic strip of flexible material, buckle means providing a loop at the upper end of said strip the opening of which maybe adjusted in dimension to receive said elastic leg encircling band therethrough with the loop of less width than the width of the band. whereby the band and strip are in frictional relation, a hose clasp, and separate buckle means providing an adjustable hose clasp receiving loop at the lower end of said elastic strip.
