Description

W. H. JOHNSON.-
GARTER.
APPLICATION FILED SYEPT- l. 1920.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
Sum/urea William f7. Johnson UNITE, STA
:WILLIIAM I-I. JOHNSON, or ARLING'roN, EW JERSEY.
GART-ER.
T0 all'whomz'tmag concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. J OHN- SON, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and residing at Arlington, in the county of Hudson and State ofNew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which'the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and bind or pinch the leg or slip downwardly thereon; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part,in which the separate parts 'of'm'y' improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the'views, and in which Figure l is a view of a part of a leg and showing one of my improved garters and the method of its use Fig. 2 a plan View of a garter detached and extended; and,
Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modification and showing parts broken away. V
In the practice of my invention, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, I provide a garter a comprising a main strap member bc divided into two main end parts or portions (Z and e which are connected at f. i
The part cl is composed of any suitable fabric, preferably two sheets stitched together, and preferably non-elastic, while the part c is preferably composed of elastic material in the usual manner but which may be composed of non-elastic material, if desired.
The part cl of my improved garter is curved upwardly in the plane of the main strap bc as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and this curvature renders said part d arc-shaped in form and causes it when the garter is in use to snugly fit that portion of the calf of the leg just below the knee, as indicated at w in Fig. 1.
. Specification of Letters Patent. I P a tel te d Aug, 9,
Application fi1edS eptemberL1920. Serial o; 407,430.
This form' of the part el -of the garter' is;
erate in the manner hereinbefore set out,
or to closely fit the leg andto rest snugly on the top or curved portion ofthe calf of I the legat the back thereof,- andthis also PATNT'Y FFICE prevents the garter from twisting or folding when in use, the connection-of the two ends of the garter around the legfas-sh'own at 00 causing said garter to snugly lit the leg, at
all'tirnes, and causing the-pull on the hanger strap 9 to be equally and evenly distributed over the entire garter.
The free'end portion ofth e part of the garter is provided with the usual male member h of the usual spring attaching clip device,-the femalefmember z' of which is connected with the free end portion of the part e of the garter, and whereby the garter is secured around the leg, and the part c of the garter is formed atv its: free endinto a' loop j in the usual manner by means jof "a buckle is, which is adjustably mounted on the body'portion of the part6- f The hanger strap g is provided .with the usual spring clip attaching members m and n whereby the garter is connected with the;
top portion of a sock'as' indicated at 0 in Fig. 1, and while, I have described my improved'garter as particularly designed for use by men, it will be apparent that myin-.
vention is not limited to this or any other particular use of a device of thisclass, and my improved garter or garters may be used by women, children or anybody who desires;
to use them.
It will'be observed that theconstruction shown in Fig, 3 differs mainly from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 onlyby reason of the p fact that there. are two suspendingsock attaching hanger straps g employed," one at;
my improved garter as shown and described, I dispense entirely with what is known asv the usual front pad employed in devices of this class, and with which the usualleg encircling strap is connected, and in lieu there- I of I provide only a'main strap member 7 adapted. to encircle the leg below the knee and that part which is designed to encircle the back part of the leg when in use being curved upwardly in the plane of the strap member, or formed on the arc of a circle in order to cause said part of the garter when in use to closely fit that part of the leg below the knee at the back of the leg and thus prevent the garter from slipping down, or crimping, or twisting 1n any way when in use, and it will be apparent that the extent or degree of the curvature of said part of the garter may be varied or made greater, if desired, than that shown in the drawing, the essential element in this connection being that said curvature be sufficient to cause said part of the garter when in use to closely fit the back of the leg below the knee for the purposes, and to accomplish the result hereinbefore set out, but in this connection it is necessary to state that my invention is not necessarily limited to the exclusion of a front pad member as it will be evident that a front pad member may be employed, if desired, in which event that part of the strap which encircles the back part of the leg below the knee would be formed on an upwardly directed curve or on the arc of a circle as hereinbei'ore set out.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a garteig'a main strap member consisting of two connected parts, one of which is composed of elastic material and the other of which is upwardly curved in the plane or the strap member, said strap member being also provided with means whereby it may be secured around the leg and with means whereby it may be secured to a stocking.
2. In a garter, an expansible and contractible strap member adapted to encircle a leg below the knee and provided with means for connecting it with a sock or stocking, the said strap member being curved upwardly along both itsu pper and lower edges at a portion of its length, the remaining portion being straight.
8. In a garter, an expansible and contractible strap member adpted to encircle a leg below the knee and provided with means for connecting it with a stocking, said strap member being curved upwardly along both its upper and lower edges at that portion of its length adapted to engage the back of the leg below the knee and the remaining portion being straight.
at. In a garter, a leg encircling strap memher having means for detachably connecting its ends together and means for connecting it with the top portion of a sock or stocking, said strap member being curved upwardly at that portion of its length which engages the back of the leg below the knee and the remaining portion being straight.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention .1 have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this th day of August, 1920.
