To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. Ann, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates particularly to stocking or hose supporters and is especially directed to that class of supporters commonly known as garters and adapted to encircle the leg of the wearer adjacent to theknee.

The principal object of my invention s to provide an inexpensive, durable, sanitary and comfortable garter that is equally applicable to the support of long or short stockings or hose.

Other objects of my invention are to pro vide a garter that may be readily adjusted to any desired girth so as to adapt it to comfortably fit the leg of the wearer; and to provide a. garter which is inelastic, and which is sanitary, being impervious and consequently incapable of absorbing moisture due to perspiration.

My invention further comprehends a garter that may be formed of a material capa ble of being cleansed without affecting its texture.

Specifically stated, the form of my 1nvention-as hereinafter described comprises an inelastic strip or band forming a girdle,

having a stud or button adjacent to one end, adapted to be selectively engaged with any one of a plurality of suitably formed apertures, disposed at convenient distances from the other end, and arranged to support a detachable hanger having means to engage the upper margin of a short stocking or hose.

My invention also includes all of the various novel features of construction and ar rangeinent as hereinafter more definitely specified.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a convenient embodiment of my invention, showing the girdle unclasped; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of said girdle clasped and showing the detachable han er depending therefrom; and Fig. 3 is a ront elevational view of said hanger detached.

berized fabric or other suitable material, and is provided with the stud or button preferably formed integral with said band 1 adjacent to the end 2, thereof, and having a shank 3 and vertically elongated head 4 adapted to be thrust through any one of a plurality of apertures 5, 6 and 7, which are suitably spaced from the end 8 of said band, and which are elongated vertically to receive the head 4. Said apertures 5, 6 and 7 respectively, have the recesses 9, 10 and 11 extended toward the end 8, arranged to receive the shank 3 of said stud or button as shown in Fig. 2, so that any tension or strain tending to burst the girdle will maintain the shank in the reduced recess, which being narrower than the long dimension of the head, prevents the accidental displacement of the stud or button which clasps the ends of the girdle together.

Suitably l is provided with short flanges 12 and 13 preferably formed in unitary relation therewith and turned over with their free edges opposed to form a guide for the end 8 of said band to hold it in the position shown in Fig. 2.

' It may be here noted that the garter thus I far described may be utilized as a retaining girdle to be worn either above or below the knee of the wearer and encircling the upper margin of a long stocking to support the same.

As shown in Fig. 2, the stud or button may be utilized to support the hanger 15,

which is adapted to connect the girdle or band 1 with the upper margin of a short stocking or hose, and which is provided with the horizontally elongated aperture 16 through which the head 4 of the button or stud may be thrust by disposing the longitudinal axis of said hanger 15 parallel with the band 1, or in a position normal to the dependent position shown in the drawings.

Said hanger. is provided adjacent to its lower end with a substantially circular aper' ture 17, having its lower wall extended to form a ll-shaped slot 19 of well known form to engage the fabric of the stocking to be supported.

My invention is advantageous in that being formed of an inelastic impervious materiahthe girdle does not tend to retard blood circulation, and may be cleansed without deleterious effects upon its structure or texture.

spaced from the end 2 the band i It'll slot extending transversely Although I have described the girdle as being adapted to encircle the leg of the wearer, it is to be'understood that it may be so formed as to encircle the waist of the wearer, and the depending hangers supported therefrom to engage and support long stockings, therefore, I do not desire to limit my invention to the precise details ofconstruction and arrangement herein set forth, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim .1. A garter comprising an adjustable inelastic girdle adapted to encircle and support a long stocking, and having an elongated bntton whose major axis extends vertically, and a detachable hanger arranged to connect said girdle with a short stocking, and having an elongated slot arranged to engage saidbuttom'the major axis of said to the length of said hanger.

5. A garter comprising a band of inelastic flexible material having a stud or button at one end provided with a vertically elongated head, and a plurality of vertically elongated apertures at the other end having recesses extended toward the end remote from the button, and adapted to receive the stud or button, said band having flanges ex tending from its opposite edges arranged to form a guide or guard for the free end of said band when the ends of said band are clasped together by said stud or button, and an inelastic hanger detachably engaged with said stud or button and having a horizontally elongated aperture through which said stud or button may be thrust.
