Description
UNITED STATEs PATENT GEEICE THEoDoEE snAETs, ,on NEW YoEK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENI IN VAULT-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,204, dated April 22, 1873 application filed Y March 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern: y,
Be it known that I, THEoDoRE SEARTs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vault-Covers and Sidewalks 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable spurs, shouldered flanges and openings for the reception of bnllseyes, all constructed and arranged as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, the letter A designates'a base-plate, which is made of cast-iron or any other suitablematerial, and in any desired form or shape. This base-plate is provided with side flanges a., and it may be made with one or more cells, according to its size and to the 1o cation for which it is intended. From the inner surface of said base-plate rise a number of oblique spurs, b, and the space or spaces inclosed by the flanges a is filled up with cement or concrete, which, when it has set, is iirmly retained by the spurs b. Without these retaining spurs the cement or concrete is liable to work loose by the concussions to which `the vault-cover or sidewalk is exposed, and particularly when the cover or walk is turned upside down the concrete lling is liable to drop out. This defectis overcome by the re taining spurs. To furnish the vaultcover or sidewalk with bullseyes c I provide the baseplate A with holes d, which are surrounded by flanges c to receive the bullseyes, and to prevent them from getting displaced, until they are finally fastened in their places by the cement lling and since the cement iilling is firmly retained in position by the spurs bthe bullseyes will not be liable to work loose, and a firm and durable connection is eiiected between all the parts of the vault-cover or sidewalk.
By these means I am enabled to produce a vault-cover or sidewalk which has the great advantage that it presents a good stepping surface, which is not liable to become slippery, and at the same time all the parts are firmly connected, and a durable and convenient article is produced.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a vault-cover or sidewalk, the base-plate A filled with concrete, and provided with the obliquely-arranged spurs b b, holes d d, and shouldered iianges e c formed as shown, for the reception of bullseyes c, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
THEODORE SHARTS.
