JOHN MCOULLAGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN STENClL-PLATES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,204, dated April 2, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in Stencil-Plates, invented by J oHN McUULLAeH, of the city, county, and State of New York.
Figure'l is a top view of my improved stencil-plate, part being broken awa-y to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail ...sectional view of the same taken through the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved stencil-plate, simple in construction and convenient in use, being so constructed that the letters or figures can be conveniently and quickly changed as may be desired; and it consists in the construction and combination of the various parts of the plate, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the bottom plate, in which are cut as many square holes as it is desired to have letters or figures. Around the plate A, at such a distance from the edges of the holes through said plate as will leave amargin wide enough to fully support the edges of the letter-plates B, is formed a rib, C. The letterplates B each contain a single letter or figure, and they are laid side by side, as shown in Fig. l. Upon the inner side ofthe side ribs O are formed, orto them are attached, at the ends of the division-bars between the letter holes, projections or stops D, to prevent the lateral movements of the letter-plates B. The corners of the letter-plates B are notched, as shown in Fig. l, to iit upon the stops D. E is the top plate of the device, which is hinged at one of its side edges to the side edge of the bottom plateA. Thetop plateEis slotted longitudinally, the width ofsaid slot corresponding with the width of the holes inthe bottom plate A, and its length being equal to the length of the series of holes in the said plate A. To the under side of the plate E is attached, or upon it is formed, a rib, F, at such a dist-ance from its edges that the said rib F will it within the rib O and rest upon the edges of the letterplates B, locking them securely in place. To the side ribs F at their lower inner edges, are attached, or upon them are formed, bars G, the lower surface of which is Hush with the lower surface of the said ribs, and which are so placed as to overlap and fit closely upon the adjacent edges of the letter-plates B. The ribs F, directly above the stops D, are notched or recessed, to receive the said stops D. The two parts of the stencil-plate are locked, when shut down upon each other, by buttons H,
`which are pivoted to the lower plate and pass up through holes or slots in the upper plate,
or the said plates may be locked together by other suitable fastenings. The end of `one of the plates A E may project beyond the end of the other plate, and may have a hole formed in it for convenience in hanging up the device. The two parts of the stencilplate may be struck up out of sheet met-al, or they may be cast, as may be desired or convenient.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An :improved stencil-plate, formed by the combination of the two plates A O D and E F G with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN MGOULLAGH.
