'nTnNIT WILLIAM` A. BOVVYER AND JAMES 1E. ELLIOTT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.v
STOVE-PIPE SHELF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,959, dated August 28, 1883.
` Application filed March Q0, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. Bowvnn and JAMES E. ELLIOTT, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Pipe Shelves; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stovepipe provided with our improved shelf. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the shelf. seen from below, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the shank ofthe shelf and the casting securing it to the stove-pipe.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending' parts in all the figures.
Our invention has relation to stovepipe shelves; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a shelf and means for securing it upon a stove-pip e, as
vhereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a portion of a stove-pipe upon which a casting, B, upon which the shelf C may be adjusted, is secured by means of metallic straps D. rlhe casting B, of which one or more may be fastened around the stove-pipe, is a long metallic bar, concave at the side facing the stove-pipe, so as to iit snuglyupon it, and is reduced slightly at its upper and lower ends, around which the Asecuringstraps D pass.
These straps consist of a strip of sheet metal,
E, passed around the stove-pipe and the end of the casting, the ends of which are bent inward under the flat bases F of two castings, G, having outwardly-projecting perforated lips H, slotted at their base to permit the ends of the strips to be inserted through the same and bent under the bases, and screw-bolts I, to be passed through the perforations of the lips to secure the castings, and by them the strips together, clamping the stove-pipe and the end ofthe casting B. A series of lips, J, project out from the outer surface of the casting at some distance above each other, having hat upper surfaces, which are radially recessed at K, and bails L project from the casting a short distance above the lips, the holes M in ,the bails being immediately above the recesses K, forming fastenings for the shanks N of the shelves. The ends of the shanks N are bent upward, forming round pins O, which iit in the holes M, the recesses K admitting of the shank, which is of the same thickness as the distance between the bails and the lips being inserted, and the lower surface of the shank is recessed at the inner end, forming a concave shoulder, I?, corresponding in curve to the curved outer. edge of the lips J. The outer ends ,of the shanks N are extended under the circular shelves, which are preferably cast in some open pattern, preventing accumulation of dust upon them, and admitting of the heat striking the bottom of the vessels placed upon them, and two or more webs or feet, Q, extend radially toward the rim of each shelf, admitting of the shelves being placed uponthe table or other object, raising the bottoms of the vessels upon them off the table.
It will be seen that several castings may be fastened around the stove-pipe by means of the same securing-straps, and that one or more shelves may be hinged in each casting, the round pins O and thc curved edges of the lips allowing the shelves to be swung to either side, so that the shelves may be placed nearer to or farther from the top of the stove, and may be swung over or away from the stove, as desired.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 'anddesirc to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination of the castings B, liaving means for securing it upon a stove-pipe, and provided with lips J and bails L, with the shelves C, having shanks N, forming upwardly-projecting pins O and shoulders P, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. The combination of the castings B, having lips J and bails L, shelves C, having shanks N, forming upwardly-projecting pins O and concave shoulders I), and metallic strips E, having perforated and slotted castings G, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
3. As an improvement in stove-pipe shelves, the combination and arrangement of the casting B, having lips J and hails L; shelves C,
having feet Q, Shanks N, and upwardly-)oro- VILLIAM A. BOWYER. 5 jeoting pins O, metallic strips E, and perfo- J AMES E. ELLIOTT. rated` and slotted 'castings G, al1 constructed Witnesses: to operate as and for the purpose shown and G. W. LYNDE, set forth. WM. V. ToUsLEY.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto affixed our signa- 1o tures in presence of two Witnesses.
