Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HAVELL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOB TO STEVENS, ROBERTS 85 HAVELL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKATE HEEL-PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,678 dated April 8, 1873; application filed February 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE HAVELL, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to the heel-plates; and it consists in the construction of the button for the heel-plate with two lugs, and on rivetin g the same on the under side of the plate, outside of the knee in which the runner goes.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the heelplate with the button in place. Fig. 2 is a side view; and Fig. 3, a plan view of the plate with the button removed. Fig. 4 is an end view, and Fig. 5 a cross-section, of the plate with the button in place.
A represents an ordinary heel-plate for skates, provided with knees B B on its under side, between which the runner is to be placed.
0 represents the button to be fastened to the plate A. Across the plate A is made a slot or mortise, a, extending a suitable distance beyond the knees B B on both sides. The button 0 is at the base provided with a lug or projection, b, on each side. When the button O is placed on the plate these lugs or projections fit in and fill up the slot or mortise a, and project on lower side of the plate on the outside of the knees, where they are firmly riveted to the plate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the lugs 12 to which the button 0 is attached, with the plate A, said lugs resting in a slot or recess in the plate, and secured in same, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of January, 1873.
GEORGE HAVELL.
