HEEL ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,860, dated J' uly 30, 1889.

To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that l, CHARLES GRUMBACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heel Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in heel attachments to enable the heels to be adjusted to either shoe, so that they may be reversed when worn; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of parts fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and speciiically pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure lis a side view of a shoe provided with the improved heel attachment. Fig. 2 is a central sectional View of the heel and a portion of the sho e. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the shoe-plate. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the heel with the heel-plate attached thereto. Fig. 5 is a modification hereinafter described.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the sole of a shoe, to which at the proper point is attached the sole-plate B by means of the small screws O C or other suitable securing devices. The edges of this soleplate are upset to form the flange D, to the free edge of which is rigidly attached the inward-extending rim-plate E, thereby forming a groove F around the periphery of the soleplate. The free edge of the upset flange may, if preferred, be turned inward to form this groove. (See Fig. 5.)

The heel G is provided on its upper side with a plate H, (which is secured thereto by means of screws g g,) and the edges of the plate are thinned, as shown, to enable them to it in the peripheral groove on the soleplate.

The sole and heel plates conform in shape to the heel, and after they are combined by sliding the edges of the latter into the groove on the former the upper side of thev heel is held close to the sole of the shoe.

A locking-screw K is passed through the sole of the shoe and through central registering-perforations I and L in the sole and heel plates, respectively, and screwed into the 5o heel (after the latter is arranged in the desired position) to secure it firmly in place.

From the above description it will be seen that the heels may. be applied to either shoe, so that when they become worn on the outer side they may be exchanged and placed on the other shoe, so that the wear is distributed. Further, the heels may be made in such sizes that they may be applied to different pairs of shoes, whereby if a customer prefer a heel 6o of certain shape he may be suited by applying a heel of the desired shape to the shoe which he has selected.

The invention is simple and cheap, consisting merely of two interlocking plates, which are applied to a heel of the ordinary con, struction, and it may be readily and quickly applied.
