JOn1\ T L. WAGER AND ABRAM L. soUDDER, or sANFORD. NEW YORK.
' Leiters Patent N 106,747, dated August 23, 1870.
IMPROVE'D CALK VIlEOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that welonx L. WAGER and fA-BRAM L. SCUDDER, of' Sanford, in the count-y of Broome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Adjusting Calks for Boot and Shoe-Heels; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature ot' ourinventiou consists in so constructing calks or spurs ou boot-heels that they eau he turned up out of the way when not needed, substantially as herein set forth.
In order to enable others skilled iu the art tof which our invention appertains to make and use same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operationl referring to theanuexed drawings,
in whichv Figure 1 is front view of a boot-heel, showing one ealk or spur on the front side of the-heel, and another n the side;
Figure 2 is a side view ofthe same;
Figure 3 is a detached view ot' the calk shown on the front side of t-.ie heel.; and
Figures 4, 5, 6, and 7 are detached views of the calli shown ou the side of the heel.
The calk on the front side ofthe heel is constructed in the following manner:
A is a plate, secured to the heel, and having the ealk or spur B pivoted on the outside, as shown in tig. 1.
One side Or edge ot' the spur bears against a lstationary pin, a, on the plate, while at the other edge .is another piu, b, projecting through a.hole ii'om the insideot` the plate A, this pin b being attached to a straight spring, d, which is secured ou the inner end ofthe pivot for the spur B.
By this means the spur is held in proper position lor service, and, when not needed, the pin b is pushedtained; for inst-ance, by the device shown on the side- 'of the heel` In this case, the spur B is made to 'move verticallyiu guides, ou the inside ot' the plate A', by the following means:
A lever, C, is pivoted ou the outsideot the plate A'. This lever is, on its inner side, provided with a pin, i, which projects inward through a semicircular slot, e, on the plate A', and into a horizontal slot, j, on the spur 1 3'.
It willreadily be seen that by turning the lever C to one side, the spur is thrown down, while,-turning it to the other side, the spur is drawn, up. D
These calles or spurs are to be used Ouice, or icy pavements, and are also veryA useful to wear ou steep roofs, 85o. j
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. 'lhe plate A, when secured to the heel ofa boot or shoe, and provided with pin or stop a, in combinan tion with the adjusting calk B, substautiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
2. ln combination with plate A and oalk .13, the
spring d, arranged as and for the purpose described.
3. Spur B', in .combination with lever C, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as. our Own invention, we aliix Our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN L. WAGER.
ABRAM L. SCUDDER.
