Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JUSTIN soHMITT, or NEw ALBANY, INDIANA.
IMPROVED SHOE-LAST.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 81,014, dated August 1l, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JUSTIN SCHMITT, of
'New Albany, in the county of Floyd, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Lasts; and do hereby declare that the4 following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to thea'ccompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this specifica-tion, A represents an ordinary shoe or boot last, and B represents the block thereof;
The last A is provided with holes w through the ball thereof, and has metallic plates secured to the top of said last over said holes, forming nuts for screws inserted in the holes a: x. The screws in said holes or :o are made with a square head, and round or blunt at the inner end, and are operated by means of a suitable wrench or key for that purpose. Said screws are for the purpose of operatin g or elevating and depressing the front or toe end of the block B.
The last is also provided with a series of slats, g g, on opposite sides of the ball, in which is inserted the stem or shank of the plates C. The upper side of said slats is formed by a metallic plate, as seen in the drawings, so as to strengthen the material and prevent the ordinary wear of the parts.
The block B is made in the usual form, and
is faced on its under side, near the front end, with a metallic plate for the ends of the screws to rest and work against. In and through the rear end of the block B is a screw, h, which is operated from the top, and rests on a plate having a slight depression in it. Said screw his for the purpose of elevating or depressing the rear end or instep of the block B, so as to correspond with feet of different sizes.
C represents a metallic plate, made convex on the outside, and is to be made of various sizes and shapes, to correspond in shape and dimensions with corns or bunions, and the different slats g g to correspond with the location ofthe same.
The advantages of this device are obvious, saving the time and trouble of tacking on and trimming down pieces of leather in each case.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the part B with the last A, when said last is provided with the screws a: :v on its under side, and with the plates C C, all constructed and used substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of March, 1868.
JUSTIN SCHMITT.
