Description

I J. G. WHITTIER. Heel and Counter Supporter for Boots and Shoes.
No. 218,099. Patented July 2 9, 1879,
fiagmuessss rgvw n ATTORNEYS NPFI'EHS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT ()EEICE.
JOSEPH'G. WHITTIER, OF ATTIOA, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT lN HEEL AND COUNTER SUPPORTERS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 218,099, dated July 29, 1879; application filed March 13, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. WHITTIER, of Attica, in the county of Fountain, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel and Counter Supporters; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a heel and counter support, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
-In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing my invention applied to a shoe. Fig. 2 is a perspective view from the inner side of the support, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof.
A represents a metallic plate or support of suitable form, which extends up onto the counter, and is fastened to the heel with a screw, nail, or barbed prong, a, the lower part of the plate extending down onto the heel, acting as a brace against the heel to keep the support firmly in place.
,On the inner side of the plate A, across the same, at or near the screw-hole, is a V-shaped I ridge or flange, b, which extends in between the counter and the heel, to prevent the plate from tnrnin g.
At the lower end of the plate A are prongs d, which extend inwardly and are pressed into the heel, to prevent, also, the plate from turning or twisting out of place. Instead of these prongs, I may form the plate at the lower edge with holes for the passage of small nails, to nail the plate in place, if so drsired. The outer side of the plate may be hollowed out to make the plate of less weight.
I am aware that acounter-supporter having one or more tangs driven diagonally into the heel is not new, and I do not claim such as my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The heel and counter supporter consisting of the plate A, provided with the Vshaped ridge or flange b, the hole at a, and the prongs (I, and fastened by means of a single screw, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of March, 1879.
JOSEPH Gr. WHITTIER.
