Be it known that I, EDWARD G. LUTZ, a `citizen of the United States of America,residing at Avalon, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Met-al Shoe-Soles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metal soles for shoes, and relates more particularly to that class of shoes which are'used in mill work'and the like.

The object of the invention is to provide a metal sole which may be applied to any shoe for the purpose of permitting the metal sole to be removed when the same is not required for actual use, thereby permitting` the wearing of a lighter and more comfortable shoe.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the under side of a shoe with my invention applied thereto. In the drawings the reference-numerafl indicates the forward part of this metallic sole,which is provided with cut-away portions 2 2 for the purpose of decreasing the Weight, the strips which are formedbetween the said cut-away portions having secured thereto or formed integral therewith numerous hobs or projections 8, which take the place of the hobnails in the ordinary shoe. At the forward ends and sides of this part l are formed clamp-pieces 4, which are adapted to engage the sides and top edge of the sole in the 5o manner similar to that which has been used lion skates, (Sac. The rear end of this part l has lugs 5 bent up in a similar manner to the clamp-pieces 4, but forkthepurpose of forming a pivotal connection between said part l and the part 6. At a suitable point forward of the heel there is secured to the sole of the shoe a plate J7, provided with a notched block 8, and at the rear ends of the part 6 there are provided tongue-pieces 9, which V'are adapted to be inserted under the forward end of the plate 7 Thesaid pieces l and. 6 will be retained in this position by the connection of the spring 10, which is pivoted in the lugs 1l on the part (3, the rear end of which is in the form of a yoke and which engages the notches in the block S onV plate 7. This spring is so arranged that it normally engages said notches, and when it is desired to remove this metal sole the spring is withdrawn from the notches by pulling the loop'l2 away from the block 8, thereby freeing the metal sole.

It will be noted that by inserting the rear end of the piece (i under the forward ends of the piece 7, which is secured to Athe sole of the shoe, piece 6 is held normally in place and there is not opportunity for the same to become disengaged from the shoe. y

A modified form of securing the rear end of the piece 6' to the sole of the shoe is shown in Figs. 4 Yand 5, and'it consists in providing `the rear end of piece v6' with a yoke or loop l13, which is engaged by the spring-pressed lever 14. This lever 14 is either held in the `open or closed position by 'the action of the release-spring l5 on the iiattened portion of the bearing of said lever.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- y l. A device of the type set forthcomprising in combination with" a sectional sole means carried on the forwardp'ortion" of'the sole for engagement with the shoe, locking means pivotally mounted on the rear portion of the sole, said rear portion-having rear,- wardly-extending projections, a clampingplate adapted to receive said extensions, and

a rack member carried thereby for engagement with the locking means on the rear portion of the sole, substantially as described.
