'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT S. ROBINSON, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ANNA M. ROBINSON AND JAMES GLEDHILL, OF SAME PLACE.
HEEL-STIFFENER AND COUNTER-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 226,792, dated April 20, 1880.
Application filed March 8, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT S. ROBINSON, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heel-Stilfeners and Counter- Supports, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish a metallic device applicable to any boot or shoe heel for stiffening the heel and supporting the counter. Protectors of this character have heretofore been made; but as constructed and attached they are liable to become loose and to split or separate the heel.
My invention consists in a plate formed with a flat head for hearing on the counter, a flange at the opposite end to rest beneath the heel, and a tongue intermediate of the ends, for entering the upper portion of the heel. The device is secured by a screw passed upward through the bottom flange and through the tongue, so that the heel is clamped between the flange and tongue and the'device held firmly.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a cross-section of a heel fitted with the device. Fig. 2
is a perspective view of the device separately.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is my improved heel-stiffener and counter-support, which is formed with a broad end or head, a, of a shape for bearing upon the side of the counter, with the end flange,
b, and intermediate tongue or lug, c, the flange b andtonguc 0 being formed with apertures for receiving the screw.
The device is applied to a heel in the manner shown, with the flange b beneath the heel in a recess formed to receive it, and the tongue 0 entering a mortise that is formed in the upper portion or base of the heel. A sorewyd, is entered at the bottom of the heel through the aperture in flange b, and extends through the material and through the tongue 0, the aperture of which is preferably threaded to hold the screw more securely.
It will be seen that the screw (1, while retaining the plate in place, also clamps the heel between the flange and tongue and prevents the lifts from separating. The tongue 0 gives additional support to the device, and the weight of the wearer tends to hold the device to the heel instead of separating it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The described heel-stiftener and countersupport, consisting of a plate formed with head a and provided with the end flange, b, and intermediate tongue, 0, that are apertured for receiving a screw, applied substantially as described and shown.
ALBERT S. ROBINSON.
