IMPROVEMENT IN SHOE FASTENINGS AND LACINGS.:

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,857, dated June 24, 1879; application filed 7 April 26, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL J oNEs, of Lincoln, in the county of Logan and State of Illinois, l1ave invented a new and valuable improvement in Shoe Fastenings or .Lacin gs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the 0011- struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figures 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings are representationsof a shoe and the front of a shoe, showing my lacing applied; and Fig. 4 is a representation of the parts thereof in detail.

This invention has relation to means for holding the shoe-lacings of shoes; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the double-loop fastening having the plane of the lacing-eye at right angles with the plane of the fastening-eyes, the latter being flattened and secured between the upper and lining by a separate eyelet, on which it turns, all as hereinafter shown and described.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the margins of the front opening, to which the lacing'eyes are attached.

Each fastening or holder b consists of a piece of flattened wire bent in eye form at each end of a short shank portion, 0, the planes of the eyes (I and 6 being at right angles to each other.

The eye d, through which the lace is designed to pass, is bent transversely, so as tofiorm' a loop with a broad hearing, which will allow the lace to slide easily, while the eye 6 is bent edgewise, forming a flattened loop or eye, which is readilyintroduced between the lining andupper of the margin a, and is secured by means of an eyelet, g, passed through the flattened eye 0 of the lace-holder and suitable perforations in said lining and upper and clamped thereto, forming a secure attachment and at the same time a journal-bearing on which the flattened loop 0 can readily turn in accordance with the strain of the lining.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The double-loop fastening having the plane of the lacing-eye d at right angles with the plane of the fastening-eye e, the latter being flattened and adapted to be passed between the upper and lining, and who secured to the shoe by means of aneyelet extending through saideye 6, upper, and lining, thus journaling the fastening on the eyelet, substantially as specified.
