BOTTOM FOR ROLLER SKATES.
' No. 323,135. Patented July 28, 1885 'We'fnesses 4 [hi/4222 I 6 2 s XQWMM J W ZZZ-W M W 7% STATES N i'TE BOTTOM FOR ROLLER-SKATES.
SPECEFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 323,135, dated July 28, 1885.
Application filed February 16, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. FEARIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Connersville, in the county of Fayette and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottoms for Roller- Skates; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of hottoms or foot-pieces used in roller-skates.
My invention consists in forming, upon or out of the metallic or other plate of which the bottom is composed, ears or lu s, which are turned up to embrace the foot, and which are provided with suitable openings to receive the shank of a buckle or a strap used to secure the skate to the foot of the skater.
It further consists in turning up or forming on the heel-part of a skate-bottom a flange nearly at right angles to the horizontal plane of the bottom or foot piece of a skate, having its upper edge curved or scalloped, and in providing the same with suitable openings to receive the shank of a buckle or strap to secure therear portion of the skate to the foot of the skater.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a top plan view of my improved skate-bottom. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In the drawings, A, Fig. 1, reprcsents'a metallic bottom or foot piece of a skate, and B B are cars or lugs turned up on the body of the bottom A on opposite sides of the same at its widest forward portion or under the ball of the foot.
y D is a flange similarly turned up on the body of the bottom piece, A, around the heel.
B B, Fig. 2, are openings in the ears or lugs BB, to which buckles or straps for fastening the skate to the foot are attached.
The flange D extends forward from the heel on each side nearly to the hollow of the foot, 5 and is provided with openings B B similar to those on the front part of the bottom, which also allow of the attachment of buckles or straps for fastening the skate to thefoot.
Buckles which are constructed with metal- '50 lic shanks may be permanently attached to, the openings B B, in which case a simple strap held by the buckle at each end will be all that is required to hold the skate to the foot.
Having thus fully described my said improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture a metallic foot-plate for roller-skates, consisting of one piece, provided with ears or lugs B B, and flange D, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES H. FEARIS.
