SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 660,752, dated October 30, 1900.

Be it known that I, HERBERT S. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Skates, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to means for adjusting the blade or runner of a skate with reference to the foot-plate, which is secured to the sole of the shoe of the user.

It is the object of the invention to provide a construction in virtue of which the runner or blade may be adjusted laterally in relation to the foot-plate and otherwise, so that the forward end of the runner may swing around to any practicable angle radiating from the heel, or so that the heel portion may be similarly adjusted, having a point of the toe part as the fixed center, or so that the runner may be bodily adjusted laterally in relation to the foot-plate in order to secure just such an adjustment of the runner as the user may desire or the shape of the sole of his shoe may require.

To these ends the invention consists of a skate having a runner provided with means for securing it to the sole-plate, combined with the sole-plate so constructed as that said fastening means may connect it with the runner or blade at any point laterally within limited bounds at both the heel and toe parts.

Reference is to be had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.

Of the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, parts being represented in section, of my improved skate. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same, the runner being shown in dotted lines and the lugs connecting it with the sole-plate being shown as in section.

In the drawings, a is the runner or blade, which is, through the medium of lugs b and bolts 0 and nuts d, connected with a baseplate e.

f is the sole-plate, provided with transverse slots g, through which and through holes in the base-plate e there extend headed bolts h, which have nuts 1' turned on their lower ends,

so as to secure the sole-plate to the baseplate and adjust the sole-plate laterally with relation to the runner or blade 0,. The adjustment is made both at the heel and toe points in order that in addition to the lateral adjustment mentioned there may be an adjustment of the runner and the sole-plate which may place one out of parallelism with the other to any degree desired. With this construction the heel portion of the sole-plate can be swung around to a limited extent and adjusted with the toe portion as a center, and vice versa, or the runner or blade can be shifted and adjusted bodily from side to side with respect to the sole-plate, I so that the runner may be given exactly correct position or alinement whatever may be the shape of the foot or sole of the shoe of the user.

It is obvious that the form or means for imparting the lateral adjustment of the soleplate with reference to the runner may be varied Without materially departing from the nature or spirit of the invention.

Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, it is declared that what is claimed is- 1. A skate comprising in its construction a single runner extending from toe to heel, a base-plate and connections therebetween, and a sole-plate laterally adjustable to a limited extent on the base-plate.

2. The combination, with the single runner extending from toe to heel, a base-plate to which the runner is connected at the toe and heel, of a sole-plate laterally adjustable to a limited extent on the base-plate.

3. The combination, with the single runner extending from too to heel, of a base-plate and connections connecting the runner therewith, and a sole-plate laterally adjustable to a limited extent on the base-plate.
